From acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro comes 'one of the most exciting and visually impressive adult-audience fables since The Lord Of The Ring movies'. Following a bloody civil war, young Ofelia enters a world of unimaginable cruelty when she moves in with her new stepfather, a tyrannical military officer. Armed with only her imagination, Ofelia discovers a mysterious labyrinth and meets a faun who sets her on a path to saving herself and her ailing mother. Soon, the line between fantasy and reality begins to blur, and before Ofelia can turn back, she finds herself at the center of the ferocious battle between Good and Evil.

Brutal yet beautiful

Pans's Labyrinth is a masterpiece of modern cinema. These are bold words for the start of a review but I figured that it was that obvious I may as well just come right out and say it.
This movie serves as a companion piece to "The Devil's Backbone" and is a fantastically realised and brilliantly shot follow up. Things are not as they seem as we are sent back to 1944 at the death of both the 2nd World War and the Spanish civil war. From here we embark on a beautifully dark blend of wartime drama and a child's fantasy world dreamt up to escape the horrors of her reality.
This is a really bold piece of filmmaking which will often surprise those who know little of what to expect, for those who do, they will tell you, you're in for a treat. The two worlds seem at first to be an odd blend, but very quickly you realise that the two are brilliantly balanced. The cinematography by Guillermo Navarro is striking, it's so precisely framed.
Brutal yet beautiful, now there's two words you'd scarcely put together, but this movie is a blend of both. Guillermo del Toro has taken huge risks with this movie and has awarded us with an effort that is almost a dark ying to "Amelie's" yang. It's that good!
New Line Cinema have granted this film with a VC-1 encoded, 1.78:1 framed, 1080p transfer onto a 50GB Blu-ray disc of brilliant quality.
This film lives largely in darkness and the blacks are sumptuous, vibrant and inky. The brightly lit scenes are sublime. The clarity and depth is striking and the contrasting is exceptional. The films imagery comes at you with tints of gold, green and blue and this disc delivers these effortlessly.
Film grain is non-existent and occasional moments of DNR have been utilised but only sparingly, it's certainly not in "Predator" territory. I also detected a couple of moments of slight edge enhancement but again only once or twice.
Detail is incredible, when you have a film as visually stunning as this the resolution increase over standard def is vital and this film showcases that impressively.
I did not detect any compression issues or artefacts. Clean, crisp visuals and sumptuous texturing.
Very highly recommended
