Best Album Yet

I think this is Rys best album to date (still waiting for Pull Up Some Dust- to be released). Its eclectic, beautifully produced and the vocals are strong & assertive.
Ry has adopted an alter ego to write & perform all the songs here. This is Buck Cash, a blue collar salt of the earth type with a passion for driving. Buck has recorded this album to pay the garage bill on his car. He wants you to listen to these songs with the volume turned up while driving.
Drive Like I Never Been Hurt is a great opening track, with impassioned vocal & Tijuana style horns. Waiting For Some Girl, Ridin With The Blues & Pink-O Boogie are all hard driving thumpin songs. Fernado Sez deals directly with the impounded car theme and is probably my favourite track.
Steel Guitar Heaven & Filipino Dance Hall Girl are the lighter sort of jazz tinged songs with authentic period styling that fans will recognise.
Can I Smoke In Here is a softly spoken chat-up monologue.
Spayed Kooley is Bucks fearsome guard dog.
Johnny Cash is childhood memories of the man in black.
I have not mentioned the guitar playing so far. The sounds are superb and the playing will not disappoint. However, they mainly just serve the songs.
I Flathead is highly recommended.

Candidate for best album of 2008

Ry Cooder continues his hot streak finding a fitting end (?) to his L.A. trilogy. Once again a beautifully packaged CD (you get a whole book for this one, not just a booklet) and a set list incorporating countless musical influences (too many to mention...)
After the marvellous 'Chavez Ravine' , the faultless 'My name is Buddy', now comes 'I, Flathead' . It's a more relaxed listen compared to the first two instalments, but it's also highly addictive... just like the mesmerizing end track 'Little Trona Girl' - what a stunning way to end an album!

This is so atmospheric that it hurts ,it doesn't fit into any category
is it Country Rock? No its much more that that,Is it rock ? no its much more subtle, is it world ?no whatever it is,all that matters is that it is a good record magnificently packaged with a hardback book it is every bit as good as anything mr Cooder has thrown our way,and lets face it he has made some great albums(Bop till you drop) for example
"Can i smoke in here" is pure Americana and in some ways reminds me of Quantum jumps "Neighbours" which is strange as musically they are poles Apart.
Cooders slide guitar is not so prominent in this outing,Mariachi bands play throughout the album replacing his previous African influences
Ably supported on this by his son we take a trip through the strange but wonderful travelogue that is Ry Cooders world.the music has a shambolic back to nature sound, which adds to endearing quality, perhaps he is trying to do a "sessions" type album
album Ala a Bruce Springsteen" but with much less Bombast than "The Boss".
In summation i would say Good album great packaging just tilt your stetson to a jaunty angle, put your feet up,close your eyes and be transported!
P.S it is nearly country when he plays the slide!!
