An Enjoyable Album But Nothing Too Special
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 30/05/2011 21:28:01
T.I.'s third album (second on a major label) "Urban Legend" is a step above your average southern rap album but not by much. It starts off well with "Tha King", "Motivation", "U Don't Know Me" & "ASAP" all being enjoyable cuts with "ASAP" being one of the album highlights for me. With these four songs he manages to hype himself up, warn the haters and talk about how he's been dealing with his new found fame among the other expected trends. After this I found the album went downhill in terms of consistency and quality.
Songs that follow include "Why U Mad At Me" which covers pretty much the same ground as "Motivation" just not as well and the uninspired "What They Do" is your typical filler track. "The Greatest" is another T.I. ego booster, by the time you get to this point in the album though you'll know how rich he is which makes this song fairly redundant. It's not all bad though the Nelly assisted "Get Loose" is one of the best cuts on the album, this should really have been a single. Other notable mentions go to arguably the biggest single from the album "Bring 'Em Out" which is a very enjoyable, energetic track and "Count Down" which is an entertaining fighting talk track with a nice beat and nice hook.
One of the least effective and disappointing aspects of the album is the guest appearances. The only worth while appearances are by the afore mentioned Nelly as well as Daz Dillenger on "My Life" which was a good track to end the album on. Mannie Fresh, Jazze Pha & Pharrell all contribute hooks but none are truly impressive and add nothing to the mediocrity of the tracks they're on. B.G. drops a stock verse on "What They Do" and Lil' Kims contribution to "Get Ya S*** Together" is less than underwhelming. Lil' Wayne & Trick Daddy's appearance might have been enjoyable if it wasn't for the dull, uninspiring production from Lil' Jon. T.I.'s home grown group P$C also make an appearance on "Lime Light" which does nothing to hype the group up at all, one of the worst cuts on the album. When showcasing your group to the mainstream you should always use something better than an average mixtape track to get them over.
Overall "Urban Legend" is a fairly average album but if you like southern rap and T.I. you should be able to get a fair amount of entertainment out of it. For me the production was lackluster with only a handful of stand out tracks. Disappointing guests spots and lack of variety on T.I.s part also brought this album down for me.
