Waiting for the Sun - fine but not upto 1st two LP standards

Yet another fine album, though not quite living up to the standard of the first two, the title track of this, The Doors' 3rd studio set, wouldn't turn up for some reason until "Morrison Hotel" some 2 years later.
The single "Hello I Love You" brought cries of plagiarism of a Kinks' single but I really don't think that was the case at all. The single B-side, the slow ballad "Love Street" has been one of my favourite Doors songs ever since it was issued.
The other single "The Unknown Soldier" saw Jim on stage being shot by a firing squad, sound and all created by the band, in which he flung himself to the floor on being shot. Nice stage antics and good theatre all adding to The Doors live experience.
We get the usual smattering of haunting slow tunes in the aforementioned "Love Street", "Wintertime Love", "Summer's Almost Gone" and "Yes, The River Knows" along with an unusual foray into flamenco guitar by Robbie on "Spanish Caravan". Rock quota includes the hard-ass "Five To One" and "Not to Touch the Earth", The bonus tracks are OK with a couple more takes of "Not To Touch The Earth" and a work-in-progress 17 minute version of "Celebration of the Lizard", the words of which appeared inside the original gatefold vinyl LP sleeve.
As with all other expanded studio album reviews, if you are thinking of buying more than the odd Doors LP may I recommend the "Perception" box for under 50 GBP whilst still available, in which you get not only the six stereo CDs but also 6 DVD-Audio discs containing 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS surround mixes of the albums, plus video footage of the band in action, housed in six 3-way fold out replica vinyl LP sleeves. It really is worth going the extra mile and paying a little more. You won't be disappointed.

This expanded version of 'Waiting For The Sun' comes in at a little over 64 minutes with the bonus tracks.
I reckon Jim Morrison could have had a really golden, feted life as a perfect pop idol if he hadn't been obsessed with fighting his personal demons and pushing back the boundaries of what was acceptable at the time as 'rock' music.
He had a gifted voice until he ruined it with too much excess, and I'm sure he could have been a fine actor as well if he'd wanted.
'Celebration of The Lizard' is a 17-minute long hotch-potch of ideas set to free form music (apart from the 'Run, run, run' section, which you get 4 times on this CD.) You could dismiss it as a pretentious pile of histrionic rock theatre performance, or you could love it, take your pick.
I don't have a bad word to say about this, The Doors 3rd studio LP, 'Five to One' is still one of the toughest rock numbers around (play it loud with full bass if your circumstances permit.)
