Still got it!

Put this in the bracket with Harvest, Comes a Time and Harvest Moon. Acoustic Country Rock at it's best. One reviewer claims this lacks the edge usually associated with the great man at his best, but I don't agree. Neil Young is Neil Young because he writes straight from the heart, and that's exactly what he does on Prairie Wind. The difference here is that unlike other great NY albums from the 70's he is no longer the tortured soul of On the Beach / Tonight's the Night. This is a collection of gentle, reflective, and uplifting songs marking a much more contented period in the life of the only artist who can give Bob Dylan a run for his money. So maybe for want of a better word the edge has gone, or maybe just softened slightly, but for me that doesn't detract from the music one bit. This is every bit as personal a record as anything that he's released before, it's just that he's happy, and if this is what happiness does for him, then long may it continue.
If you like this you should also get the Heart of Gold DVD where he premiers these songs in Nashville. It also features some great live, Harvest era material, from the same concert including just about the best version of Old Man you could ever wish to hear.

Young is getting old
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 20/05/2008 13:20:27
Neil Young is a someone who is considered revolutionary in the music industry and I am one of those people that support that theory.
The first song entitled 'the painter' wouldn't look out of place in one of Young's masterpiece albums such as Harvest or Harvest Moon. A pleasent opening track which makes you feel like this album is set up to be Young at his best.
However, Young appears to of lost a lot of his edge, one song he starts singing about how he remembers something Chris Rock said. Although I don't consider Young to be amazing at the instruments he plays and many people can't adjust to his voice, i've always been impressed by some of the lyrics he writes, yet this time I felt myself feeling disappointed.
many of the tracks then desend into Neil attempting to fuse his acoustic country style with a brass ochestra which for me doesn't work.
Despite all this many of the tracks are what you could expect from Young being the amazing song writer he is, yet it just feels like something was missing when he was writing this

This shows ole Neil taking it easy and in country mode, with his friends.
The Bonus DVD shows the tracks being recorded in the studio and is very enjoyable in it's own right.
