The best Avenged Sevenfold album ever!
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 17/02/2011 18:00:21
I originally bought this album for my brother who is a fan of rock/metal bands, I asked to borrow it to download onto my I-Pod and boy was I not dissapointed! For weeks on end I was told to turn my music down because I left the album on repeat and on full volume! I can't select my favourite songs as I would be writing down the whole album. Totally worth the money I cannot recommend it enough.

Wow, I was not expecting this!

I have to admit that I did not like Avenged Sevenfold until I heard the 'Nightmare' single on TV. My metal taste is much more 'vanilla' bands such as Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Machine Head, Fear Factory, Disturbed etc.
I have owned this CD for a fortnight and I cannot stop listening to it! The music ranges from downright heavy to outstanding technical proficiency. The lyrics range from angry snarls to reflective and beautiful harmonies. Listen to this on a decent hi-fi and you will be even more impressed.
All credit to the guys for delivering 66 minutes of talent. Even if the songs don't hook you instantly, listen to them two or three times and you begin to appreciate what is on offer. Most songs average 5 minutes and take you on a separate musically journey within each song...almost like mini-stories. Very impressed.

There are very few albums in which every track is brilliant, and this is definitely one of them! There is not one thing about this album i don't like. Mike Portnoy has definitely done The Rev justice! This album still has Jimmys influence, and it's a credit to him. My favourites are Fiction, Nightmare and Natural Born Killer, however, all songs are excellent. Would definitely recommend this album to any A7X fan! foREVer.

At first I wasn`t impressed after the first listen (being a huge city of evil fan) but it just took me a few listens to appreciate the album. I love Avenged Sevenfold, they`re such talanted guys. My favourite song by far is Save Me, I just always feel the need to listen to it. However, I feel the only decent tracks are 1-5 and the last one, but those songs are so genius, its definately worth owning. Don`t think the slow ones work (even fiction in my opinion - M shadows voice in it just doesn`t sound right) Plus u have to buy it for the ting at the end of an explosive start of Natural Born Killer lol these guys know just the right mix that goes into music and every album is different.

Great.. urm just great AX7 really are good.

I bought this album based on the other positive reviews. Although it is the only AX7 album I own, I will now order the others. On a first listen it did not really click, but on the second stint it did. I have even bought several other copies to give as Christmas presents. My metal addiction is varied over all metal genres and this was a pleasent surprise. I was not a fan and once I found out about the tragedy in the band, I am converted. To 'get' this album for me was great as the band have done so well to hang this together not just well but superbly. The title tracks lyrics get in your head and you find yourself singing the track at work.. Just need to avoid the boss !! If you are unsure at this reduced price you must be barking!.

An understandably difficult album, but great nonetheless.

As far as difficult albums go, it doesn't come much harder than one where a primary songwriter in the band has died prior to the album's recording.
Still, the band have persevered and produced a very strong set of songs - some of which don't work (notably the more ballad-style numbers) and some of which work very well, such as the title track, 'Welcome To The Family', 'Natural Born Killer' and 'God Hates Us'.
Perhaps the most poignant track on the entire disc, however, is James Sullivan's final composition, the guitar-free 'Fiction'. Haunting and eerie, the song's lyrics, coupled with the fact that it was the final composition of his life, makes it almost sound like a musical suicide note.
Fans of their first two albums may not enjoy this disc so much, but it encompasses all facets of their sound throughout the years, and Mike Portnoy does a bang-tidy job of performing the drum tracks. It's a very enjoyable disc on the whole.

in complete agreement with bushymoose. to produce something so brilliant after something so tragic as jimmy's death just defines a7x. brilliant album but fear they will not carry on, jimmy is too irreplaceable.

Best Avenged Album to date
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 12/08/2010 01:48:50
This is a masterpiece, like most of fans out there, I had been looking forward to this album since before Jimmy died, I am glad to say that this in my opinion is the best album they have ever made. Not just because of the passing of 'The Rev' but because the amount of musical emotion that they involve in the music is excellent. I can't recommend certain songs but I can recommend them all. Just an excellent album. It's managed to reach #1 on the Billboard charts and managed to get top 10 in most countries. Definately going to be the bands most successful album. If there is one song that stands out it would be 'Fiction' the last song by Jimmy that he wrote, it's very sad and gives you goosebumps because of the message it holds.
Every person who has ever listened to Avenged Sevenfold should buy this, it's fantastic and I cannot get enough of it.

Just one listen so far.....

.....but amazed. Another complete turnaround from last album, but with loads of recognisable riffs. Mike Portnoy's technical ability is unrivalled (that is no disrespect to Jimmy), no wonder Jimmy was influenced by him.
A7X have pulled it out of the bag again, despite their tragedy.
Nice one, guys.
