Why Red?..........Maybe it's because I'm Irish!

What can be said about this gem that people don't already know?
This movie is unique as far as I'm concerned, it's the only film where I am yet to find anyone who is either indifferent or not approving of it. Men, Women, old, young, everyone I've ever asked has said "Now that's a great movie......love it".
This is currently ranked as No 1 on the IMDb top 250 films list with nearly a million votes, beating some movie called "The Godfather" into the No 2 position.
When you watch films like "E.T" or "War Horse" sorry Steven, you get this feeling deep inside called pass me the vomit bag, they are well made make no mistake but the sentiment is layered on so thick you can't help feeling a bit pukey. So why is it that this movie which wears it's heart on it's sleeve so unashamedly can get away with it. In fact when the test screenings were shown we never had the final beach moment where our hero's meet and exec's at Castlerock stated that they had to show it, you can't cheat your audience and we welcome it, lovingly, long for it. I bet some of you even rewind it just to enjoy that sweetest of moments all over again.
Frank Darabont is a lover of Frank Capra I'd bet my house on it. If you watched "It's A Wonderful Life" followed by "Shawshank" you'd believe people could fly!!!
If you took screenplay writing lessons you'd be told to avoid the plot mechanics of a voice over, yet this movie has it all the way through, it appears to break some of the most fundamental rules but once again triumphs magnificently, maybe it's Morgan Freeman's voice.
The characters are nothing new either for a prison drama, the evil warden, the violent guards, the bad in-mates, the good ones, some innocent, some guilty, they're all there and yes even the prison walls themselves play a big character and yet it feels fresh and new. It's incredulously slow and long but wait don't tell me it isn't an issue.
It's all about storytelling, and Frank Darabont hits levels of genius here, with such wonderfully rounded characters which we really do care about.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE, lets face it we all do.
Now if the transfer is bad, it's bad this cannot be forgiven.....................
Warner Brothers have granted this movie with a VC-1 encoded, 1.78:1 framed, 1080p transfer onto a 50GB Blu-ray disc of fantastic quality. YES!
What a big improvement on previous standard definition releases.
We are met with an extremely fine level of filmic grain, barely noticeable but enough to provide us with a pure filmic look, as a result we have great clarity and detail. Fabric and object sharpness is wonderful.
Skin tones are warm and lifelike with every beaten detail of people's faces clearly visible. We do have one or two moments of crush in the darker scenes with the bird Jake completely disappearing in deep shadowy moments but this is nick picking really.
Colour saturation is good although we aren't blessed with the most diverse colour palette in the first place, this is a prison film after all. Contrast levels did spike on the previous DVD versions but they are spot on here and we do get some fantastic warm golden hues during the tarring of the roof scene.
Finally I did not detect any edge enhancement, DNR, compression, banding, aliasing or haloing. Bravo.
Movie 6/5 (ha ha) transfer 4.5/5
Just buy it.

This blu-ray simply doesn't match other titles though for me it was still worth the double dip(or should I say treble, vhs, dvd and blu)the audio remains on the basic dolby digital track but the picture is better than it's been before so this is the only version I wanted in my collection.

The Shawshank Redemption, prior to it's Blu Ray release, was regardless as perhaps the greatest film of all time. IMDB have it ranked as their number one film ever. It took me a long time to get round to watching this masterpiece but I can honestly say I have never been more captivated by a single piece of media than I was, and still am with The Shawshank Redemption. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman give two timeless performances, espescially Freeman. Both characters grasp you by the throat and won't let you go till the films conclusion (which by the way is the single greatest finale to a film I've ever seen, but I won't spoil it for anyone who is yet to watch it) but by god are you glad they did grasp you. It's an emotional rollarcoaster like no other film. I felt fear, confusion, anger, sheer hatred, sadness, shock and, most importantly, absolute happiness and peace through-out the film. It's a very strange set of emotions but you'll know exactly what I mean once you've seen it.
I had Shawshank on DVD, and only pretty recently finally bought myself a Blu Ray player. Shawshank was one of the first films I looked for and thankfully, Play.com had it going pretty cheap. So is it worth the transfer over to Blu Ray? Well, it depends on how much you enjoy the film to start with. If you, like me, love this film like no other, it's an absolute no-brainer. Some have called the transfer 'bland', I call the entire set bland, regardless of whether it's in HD or not. It's meant to be grey and dark and gloomy. Shawshank ain't set on an ultra colourful rainbow with Unicorns dancing around on it, this is perhaps one of the single grittiest looking locations for a movie of all time and this feeling of grittiness is transfered very cleverly. It's the detail in the setting that makes the picture pop off the screen. Details in the bricks is something that, weirdly enough, I noticed straight away (and trust me, there are ALOT of bricks in this film). The actors on screen look dirty but not thanks to the transfer. You can tell this film is set in a prison because everything has a look of being un-hygenic in it's appearance. But that has only been noticed because of the sharpness of the picture on display. It ain't colourful and bright, it's just supremely detailed in every aspect. So in that respect, if you love Shawshank, GET this Blu Ray. If you aren't so keen as say, myself, but enjoyed it, either find a cheap copy or stick to your DVD copy, as Blu Ray players bulk up visual quality some-what anyway. The sound is sometimes a bit hit and miss but the soundtrack roars like no other, and the famous theme song during the overhead shot of the prison sounds just as beautiful as ever.

i have had this film on dvd for years, and didnt get the remastered version, but the moment i saw it come out on blu-ray, it was the first one i bought... did i regret it? not a chance... probably one of the best films ever made, and now in a format you have to see to believe... the picture and sound quality is beyond what i expected... the warm hues come off so well you marvel at the colours on display... if you do not have this, you are missing out... simples

A timeless classic of one mans incarceration and his bid to prove his innocence, truly heart warming yet shows the non fairy tale world of prison life and a corrupt prison warden abusing his position and pulling strings to manipulate those around him. Adapted from Stephen Kings short story and brilliantly narrated by Morgan Freeman who stars also as Tim Robbins solace and friend while inside. With a great musical score, cinematography and supporting roles this film keeps you on edge right up until the amazingly executed prison break and reunion for our hero. This film inspires hope and justice in a way no other has since and perhaps never will.

Everyone knows about this movie now, but when I originally watched it in the Mid Nineties, it was pretty much unheard of.
It was one of the rare occasions, when you watch a movie, not expecting much, and for it to blow you away.
It may not have the same impact now, as it's reputation is now Massive. But still a Class Act.
Brilliant Slow Burning Story, with a Gem of a pay off. Poignant, Funny, Classy, the whole lot.
Top notch Performances from Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. Masterfully Directed by Frank Darabont.
One of the most complete Movie Experiences of the last 20 Years
