Somersault - The Perfect Soundtrack For Anyone's Day!
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 15/01/2008 16:13:05
This is the third album from Chicane, and while it does not contain some of the finer more ambient and trancy rhythms than it's former FFTMC and Behind The Sun do, there are some fine tunes on this one! "Arizona" & "Time Of Your Life" are the only 2 instrumentals on this album, "Arizona" wich resembles "Early" & "Overture". Other good tracks to check out are "Come Tomorrow" "Spirit" vocals provided by Jewel, "Turning Corners" and "Way I'm Feelin". Nick Bracegirdle has took a big gamble on this one, and i think he's pulled it of great, and like some other artist, he wasn't afraid to experiment by taking Chicane into new directions! If you're a fan of Chicane, then i would give this one a listen, it may take a couple of plays to get used to it, but it will grow on you! The cd is shorter than the two previous Chicane album's, but there are some catchy tunes! Add this cd to your collection, and "Come Tomorow" you'll be having "The Time Of Your Life" Enjoy!!!

A bitter disappointment
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 08/08/2007 14:47:45
I have been waiting for this album for a very long time. FFTMC and Behind the Sun are two of my favourite albums. I was instantly drawn to the distinctive beat, poignant melodies, beautifully layered ambience and particularly in the last album, unusual vocal peformances with fine lyrics. No body does it better..or used too.
This album manages to retain some of the former Chicane flair, most notably in the characteristically polished production. Gone however, are the fine melodies, trancey beats and the beautiful and unsual songs that made Chicane such a unique act. These have been replaced with a sequence of boring, unforgetable radio friendly pop songs. I imagine this will be very popular with Radio 1 listeners. The female vocal performances have largely been dumped in favour of straining male vocals, provided by Jack Starks, who at times sounds like one of the Gallagher brothers trying to do a dance mix, competing with crashing drums and electric guitars. The slightly harder edge to the sound is fine and probably a necessary progression, - I was expecting the album to be different. But I was also expecting to like it. I dont.
This is pop music - pure and simple. Catchy, Ok to drive too, but bland, souless and ultimately unsatisfying. Which after the two previous master pieces, comes as a very bitter disappointment.
To add insult to injury, the album has 10 tracks - which as radio friendly pop songs are mostly about 4 minutes in length, some less. Giving a running time of a mere 42 minutes. This really is Chicane Lite! And value for money it isnt.
Frankly, I'm appalled.

A great addition

Nick Bracegirdle has come a long way since the heddy days of the Disco Citizens churning out thumping club mixes for the peak time dancefloor. This new album offers more for the general music listener who may not be too atoned to the genral club fayre. From the brilliant 'Come Tomorrow' to the ambient leanings of Arizona and the 'Jewel' vocalled 'Spirit' (both taken from the unreleased album Easy To Assemble) , it is a great musical journey. Whilst Tom Jones is still remaining hip with the 'yoof' of today by adding his talents to the club hit 'Stoned in Love' , in my opinion this is probably the worst track on the album, which really shows how much of a good listen this is!
Track to head for - 'Way I'm Feeling' (This track is very remeniscent of 'Daylight' from the afore mentioned unreleased Easy To Assemble).
A great album well worth spending some of your hard earned cash on.

Somersault, An Essential Ingrediant For A Summer To Remember
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 15/07/2007 16:05:14
Chicane isnt just about music, its about how that music makes you feel, its a soundtrack to life itself. After last years success with Stoned In Love featuring the un-mistakable voice of Tom Jones, Chicane mastermind Nick Bracegirldle has produced what only promises to be the best album of British music for as long as I can remember. Somersault contains songs with meaning, music we can all relate to. From 'Nothing' To 'Come Tomorrow' If your getting ready for a night out on the town or just want to be by yourself, this album is guarenteed to give you the 'Time Of Your Life'.
