The lucky ones die first!
Based on the original 1977 film by fright-master Wes Craven, The Hills Have Eyes is the story of a family road trip that goes terrifyingly awry when the travellers become stranded in a government atomic zone. Miles from nowhere, the Carter clan soon realizes the seemingly uninhabited wasteland is actually the breeding ground of a bloodthirsty mutant family... and they are the prey!

For those in doubt, I can confirm that this IS the 'un-rated' version of the film, and includes all the additional footage such as the nasty throat shot on Lizard.
It's a great film and a worthy remake. It certainly isn't one of the better blu-ray transfers such as Sin City, but it does pack worthy quality in picture, and even more in sound.

The Hills Look Good

There's no question that French director Alexandre Aja knows his way round the horror genre and how to extract maximum scares and tension out of most situations. And he also has a real prevalence for extreme gore and nastiness. (Probably the most shocking scene in this remake - and there are many - is when someone points a loaded gun at a baby. Now THAT takes daring on a film maker's part.) The film is relentlessly vicious and does its best to come up with the most gross characters ever. In that, it largely succeeds. But eventually its sheer excessiveness makes you realise that this is merely a cartoon with lots and lots of blood. But there is undeniable power in the closing scenes when the victims decide to fight back against their appalling attackers.
Unusually for a horror film, most of the action takes place in broad daylight. This of course serves as a good showcase for Blu-ray, and your sound system will get a vigorous workout too.
