THE FRENCH CONNECTION 1
Old Skool Cop Movie
Had been looking to watch this movie for some time now, due to it's reputation and the fact that it stars the legendary Gene Hackman.
I didn't feel it was the great it is made out to be, bear in mind I am watching it about 35 years after it's release.
And from what I hear it inspired a lot of the cop movies after that, so maybe I can't fully appreciate the impact it made at the time of release.
But I did enjoy it for the Story, Acting and the Gritty Direction.
Especially Enjoyed the Good Cop - Bad Cop pairing of Gene Hackman and Roy Schneider.
The Cat n Mouse chase at the Subway Station was really well executed.
No SFX Car and Train Chase through New York is fantastic.
On a sentimental note it was Nice to see the Brooklyn of the 70's, which became another character in the movie
THE FRENCH CONNECTION 2
The sequel to French Connection is a continuation of the first movie and has Gene Hackman's character in France chasing down the Mastermind Villain from the first movie. The movie starts out on a fairly light note and turns Hackman's Fish Out of Water experience in France into a humorous affair.
But things soon take a turn for the Dramatic and after that the movie doesn't really let up, it veers from Torture to Revenge and then to a fantastic Foot Chase at the Climax.
I actually found Part 2 more entertaining than Part 1. The film is more of a Suspenseful drama, rather than a Who Dunnit Cop movie.
The acting was superb, Gene Hackman was just mind blowing in the Cold Turkey sequence and Charming and Gruff at other times. The actor who played the role of the French Police Inspector was also very good in his role.
Overall a pretty good Thriller

A must have Blu Ray box set for any fan of 70s cinema. The French Connection is one of my all time favourites & this, in William Friedkins own words is the best version ever available. The picture quality is grainy in parts but this is due to the age of the film, (the DVD version is grainy aswell, its just more noticeable here). The look of movie that Friedkin has created here is fantastic. He took 2 versions of the film, one black & white, one oversaturated colour and bleed the colour into the black & white in a 70:30 ratio to give the film a bleak pastel look to suit the tone & time of the movie. The sound quality is also quite outstanding. This set also includes the most complete set of extras for the French Connection ever seen, from Freidkin bringing us through the streets of modern day NY looking at the various set locations, to analyizing Don Ellis' marvelous score, to Mark Kermode's BBC documentary from a few years back & many more. All extras with the exception of Kermode's documentary are in High Def aswell
The French Connection 2, while not as good as the first, holds up well in its own right. The picture quality here is excellent, no grain & crystal clear, which is amazing for a 35 year old film.

Both movies have great stories and I have had them on DVD for a long time. Unfortunately, Blu-Ray Picture Quality disappoints. I do not comment on Sound Quality as I do not have proper equipment to judge it.
