A particularly good film to show of your blu-ray set up I think, and with it being an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 I had no annoying black bars on my screen! I give it 5 stars because of this and its action packed nature which really does show of the detail.

DTS HD Master Audio 7.1???
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 04/11/2009 14:52:54
Didn't like the movie the first time. But because the movie had DTS HD Master Audio 7.1 audio I had to give it another go. Expirience it, as they say. I was really disappointed that while the cover says so, the disc doesn't contain a 7.1 track. I've read that some playbuyers do have the good audio track so what went wrong.
I liked the movie more this time. Especially the action looks good and sharp. The sound is also very good. But I'll always wonder...
I give the movie 3 stars but because of the missing 7.1 audio track I take one star of.

Proof that del toro is unmatched in creativity

Hellboy 2 could have been a standard action film. It could have been like any of the other average comic book films out there. But it isnt.
This film features some of the best creature and set design I have ever seen.
Its quite large on humour, and the dialogue is often clever. Action sequences are amazing to look at, you know this isnt your standard film when 2 mutants start to drunkedly sing together. Or when hellboy slowly falls in the rain, and music begins to play as we watch his expressions slowly change. The film also features a villain you can almost understand.
Its a great looking disc too. Full screen instead of widescreen bars(more films should do this). Colours are vibrant and everything is sharp. The detail on faces and hair stands out.
A blu ray disc well worth buying.

If only it had kept going

I thought the first two thirds of this movie were pretty much 5 out of 5. The sounds effects and colours are a fantastic example to show off anybody's system. It was such a shame that the last 30 or 40 mins were complete pooh. As soon as the film left America it went downhill, with so many other films being copied, including the Matrix you can't die because.....bit. You see films with 4 producers and 4 executive producers and I just can't understand why they can't get it right. I guess a decent ending is the hardest thing to write. Luke Goss was pretty good as the bad guy and there was some great humour in the film, which again stopped in the last third.

Good Movie. If you liked the first, this continues the ride.

Picture and Sound very crisp and clean. Great in 1080p and DTS / 5.1.
They also sortted out the layer change so you do not notice it.
(I wish ALL BluRays were this well laid on the disc)
The menus are the latest all feature fangled ones.
A Great move! - What a ride.
Visually a lush world that goes far deeper into the "older origins" of where Hellboy and the other 'freaks' come from... and brings it slap bang into our world of today.
There is much greater sense of the exotic that comes with a bigger budget and allows us to see more in the mind of Guillarmo Del Toro.
Its Hellboy 1 on acid.
Visually it borrows from so many other movies that I can summaries the various chapters as thus:
Starts with a LOTR recap.. Old Elf King and a big battle with humans and then building of an un-natural army (that is just to good!) and their retirement and the forging of a one ring, split up for safe keeping...
Then goes into a Men In Black section.
(With beast making coffee and saying Howdy Mac and all)
Then a whole Harry Potter - Lets get into Diagonally bit.
(You know the wizards all blend amongst us, but hidden behind a wall)
Then a Star Wars Episode IV section.. Kinda lets walk around tattoeen and just look at all the different beings etc..
Then a nice fight.. (Some VERY good fights in this movie BTW)
Then a Matrix scene is lifted and put into this movie... You know the bit when Trinity says to Neo "..Get up"
Then we get to visit a nice character from LOTR final movie.. (You know, the guy with a big mouth but no eyes.. (The voice of Big S.)
Then Star Wars episdoe I section with "Roger Roger" droids and another nice fight and the whole "They destryoed the control ship".
All very nice - but the scenes and ideas do feel borrowed.
Dont get me wrong.
It filled with lush extravegance and a fantasy filled plume of the most exotic kind...
Even with all the borrowing - It crams so much in that you just go with the visula flow and ride and you will love it!!
Best scene for me ?
Barry Manilow scene. When they are all sitting in rocking chairs by the fire.. (When you watch it - you will know what I mean!)
Worth a watch and a re-watch.

Although I thought it a better story/plot in hellboy 1, the effects cant be faulted in this one, the story didnt grab me at all, after starting with an insight of hellboy and his 'dad' kicking this off being a lame intro that should have really been in the first film, got impression the writers put this in to 'fill it out'. Well, sorry, but if it hadnt been for some pretty decent FX, id have slept through chunks of it. Only saving grace is that this disc generates full screen without the widescreen black lines top and bottom, which is hopefully a good sign for future films, because on my 37" screen proved really good to watch. In conclusion - better effects than first film, dire story.

Excellent Film, 7.1 Problems
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 02/02/2009 10:43:46
Excellent film, however dissapointed that cannot get the dts 7.1 to work on my system, using pioneer bdp-lx08 bluray player into the pioneer vsx-lx70 which doesn't illuminate the rear back surround speakers, searching the internet pulls up that i'm not the only one having this problem, i know my system is capable of 7.1 so there are either problems with the uk version of this disc, or false packaging.
