There are no rules in The Game - and that will make life very difficult for Nicholas Van Orton (Michael Douglas), a successful businessman who is always in control. Van Orton lives a well-ordered life, until an unexpected birthday gift from his brother (Sean Penn) destroys it all. Van Orton has been enrolled in a game -"a profound life experience"- that begins quietly enough but soon erupts into a chain of devastating events. Like it or not, he must either win, or lose control of everything in his life.

Under rated David Fincher Movie
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 18/06/2011 13:38:03
This is a top notch psychological mind trip. The story and the lead character played by Michael Douglas start off in a control and calm manner. But as the story progresses it just twist and turns in some very leftfield ways. Director David Fincher is on top form her, as is lead actor Michael Douglas who is perfect in role that requires Authority and Respect. He is very well supported by Sean Penn and Deborah Unger. Well worth catching this if you enjoyed any of the following. Se7en Panic Room Fight Club Memento Note: This Review was made by Play.com customer: Rambo456 on Rakuten’s Play.com on the date shown.
Seymoure Butts

This early yet stylish Fincher direction is both dark and edgy in its attempt to portray one man fighting to prove his innocence. What begins as a typical Hitchcock thriller evolves into a much deeper account of conspiracy and betrayal while all along the audience is left wondering what is game and what is real. Nicholas Van Orton, played well by Michael Douglas, is the hero with everything to lose and simply struggling to survive the game that he has had thrust upon him. With more twists and turns than you could ever wish for, the story builds and builds on Van Ortons hysteria right up to the ending which some may argue falls slightly weak. The final act wraps everything up so neatly that you almost feel cheated and are left wondering what might have been should Fincher have decided to head down a different route. Overall a very worthy film, breathless pace with fine acting all round. Note: This Review was made by Play.com customer: BarryNormanJunior on Rakuten’s Play.com on the date shown.
Are You Ready To Play?

The Blu-Ray presentation is excellent for both sound and vision and is highlighted especially in the darker atmospheric scenes. This film took me on one psychological thrill ride after another, as I found it loaded with twists and turns from start to finish. Michael Douglas pulled off one of his best performance as Nicholas Van Orton, a man who is approaching his birthday, upon which he receives an invitation to play a game, given to him by his brother Conrad (Sean Penn). Nicholas reluctantly agrees and soon finds out that the game is more than he was prepared for. There are a number of appearances of shady characters to add to the blend, and you never knew who was trustworthy or what was going to happen next, this was one film that must be seen by those who enjoy never knowing for certain how a movie will end. The conclusion is certainly not predictable. The storyline is all centred around Michael Douglas and beautifully portrayed of being the innocent individual who happens to be in the middle of a game he cannot control. Nonetheless, a really good movie can not be pulled off by one actor, a great deal of credit should go to Sean Penn and Deborah Kara Unger for their influential portrayals in this film along with superb directing from David Fincher. Vanilla Blu-Ray

One of Fincher's classics.Sean Penn & Michael Douglas in a really cool thriller. Nice Blu-Ray transfer, DTS sound, but terrible menu system that is so poor it has to have a guide(can't understand why Universal do it !!?? Just like the awful menus on the DVDs. Why ??!!) Add to that a totally Vanilla disc. No commentary, no extras, NOTHING. The movie itself is 5 stars, great to see Harris Savides work in HD, but the total lack of extras let it down. The Game stands up well against Fight Club, Alien 3 and all of Fincher's early stuff, but doesn't get anywhere near the recognition it deserves. If you have not seen this film, turn the sound up, the lights off and enjoy this very stylish slow burner. You won't be disappointed. For the rest of us , hopefully Universal will give the film the blu-ray it deserves. This film deserves more.
