Academy Award winner Denzel Washington stars in this "riveting and powerful nail-biting thriller" from Robert Zemeckis, the Academy Award-winning director of Forrest Gump and Cast Away. Airline pilot Whip Whitaker (Washington) miraculously lands his plane after a mid-air catastrophe. But even as he's being hailed for his heroic efforts, questions arise as to who or what was really at fault. The powerful pull of the bottle is conveyed with considerable force...The character fits Washington like a tailored strait-jacket, possibly because he's worn it before.

While it's notable for a great lead performance and also for being director Robert Zemeckis' first live action film since 2000 there's also no getting away from the fact that 'Flight' ends up the kind of drama about alchoholism that feels very familiar and features a storyline that isn't always hard to figure out.
After his flight goes down (in a spectacular and frighteningly done sequence that is easily the visual highpoint of the film), Washington's pilot is acclaimed as a hero for saving as many lives as he could. But, the night before the flight he indulged in drink, drugs and sex and wasn't exactly clean when piloting the plane. Forced to look at his life amidst media intrusion and an investigation into the circumstances of the crash, he will face his demons head on.
Washington's performance is very very good, and he was rightly thrown an Oscar nomination for his work. Several supporting performances are also good even if some are little more than cameos but unfortunately British actress Kelly Reilly is wasted in a role that offers less than it promises as a fellow addict navigating her way (fear not though, being a Hollywood film Reilly never looks anything other than radiant even at the 'depths' of her addiction) through recovery as well. As the story builds to it's conclusions all the beats play out as you would expect in a drama of this nature.
While it's not in any way an unsatisfactory film, it's also one that maybe isn't as different as it would like to think it is. It's a satisfying enough film to watch once or maybe every few years but not one to watch over and over for me.

Crash 'N' Burn

This is the sort of movie Hollywood likes to release around Oscar time, and to this Washington turns in another oustanding performance. Flight resesmbles a 2001 incident, when a captian of a stricken Airbus A330 landed the aircraft fuel-less and saved 306 passangers, only for the media to dig the dirt on his criminal past.
If you go to see flight expecting a disaster movie as in the old Airport movies then think again. As although the first twenty minutes is truly nerve shredding as the seriously hung over Washington crash lands his stricken aircraft in a field and is hailed a hero, what follows is more than I expected as Flight is a moral drama that delves deep into inner demons of alchol and substance abuse. Finally leading to redemption but at a price. Kelly Reilly ( Eden Lake and Watson's wife in both Sherlock Holmes movies) is outstanding as the heroin injecting masseuse, who Washington meets in hospital. Washington never misses a beat as he unravels from cocky self assurence to reveal his inner monster reging with self pity and loathing. The final act of the film does go a little Hollywoody and John Goodmans dope dealing friend seems ill-fitting, but on the other hand offers some darkly comic moments. Add to this brillianty subtle special effects and a fantastic sountrack Flight is well worth boarding.

its good to see denzel back to doing movies with a descent storyline..
after unstoppable which was the biggest load of poo i was starting to get a little worried..
the movie focuses on a flight officer who has a drinking problem..i dont want to say to much but if your looking for adventure/action look elsewhere..this is a movie about a man accepting and coming to terms about an addiction with alcohol..
good acting good storyline makes a nice change..

THE TRUTH WILLOUT'
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 29/01/2013 22:24:42
alcohol dependant, drug taking pilot 'whip whitaker' takes charge of doomed flight 227.
the plane takes off in the wake of a violent storm, when the plane levels off above the storm second-in-command takes charge of the flight while 'captain whitaker' sleeps off his hangover.
suddenly a catestrophic incident occurs causing the plane to nose dive out of control, 'captain whitaker' miraculously lands the plane, four passengers and two flight crew perish, ninty six survive...........truly a miracle.
however the captain becomes the subject of an intense investigation despite his heroics in landing the sticken craft.
was the crash his fault, did drink and drugs contribute ?
great performance from 'denzel washington'
the flight sequence was indeed very tense, you sure wouldn't wanna watch this a few days prior to catching a flight........would be a bit like watching 'titanic' whilst on a cruise.............
worth a spin.

Not quite sure. It was well shot, produced, directed and flawlessly cast with superb acting, however the story loses itself and becomes a little scatty and boring. The finale is poor too as you will see, the ending goes from one direction to another. I had many feelings whilst watching this, but enjoyment was not one of them. I'd wait for tv to see it.
