David Lynch, creator of Twin Peaks and acclaimed director of 'Eraserhead', 'Blue Velvet' and 'Wild At Heart', directs this bizarre but true story of courage and human dignity. John Hurt gives the performance of a lifetime as John Merrick, the worst "freak" known to Victorian medical science, a man whose body is hideously distorted into a grotesque parody of an elephant.
Rescued from a travelling freak show by Sir Frederick Treves, Merrick gradually reveals himself to be a strangely sweet and gentle man, remarkably unembittered by the degradation and torment he suffered at the circus.
Beautifully shot by Freddie Francis and with an excellent supporting cast including Sir John Gielgud, Anne Bancroft and Dame Wendy Hiller, 'The Elephant Man' is a compelling, moving and enchanting story. The film was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor.

I only watched this film recently, as I've heard plenty about it, but never wanted to see it. But I bought it on a whim, and i'm so glad i did. I never realised how emmotive the film was going to be, but from the moment it started, i was hooked. And i have to admit to crying my heart out, unexpectedly! It was a powerful and sensitive film, which was beautifully performed by every actor, as they all made the film so memorable.
A must in any collection..and I defy anyone who doesn't feel a tug on their heart strings! Absolutely spectacular!

Director of the bizarre David Lynch made a slightly more normal feeling film with John Hurt as the real life John Merrick a.k.a the 'Elephant Man'.
The film goes from Merrick in a circus to becoming a respected figure throughout London, helped along the way by a surgeon named Frederick Treves(Sir Anthony Hopkins). The story is both uplifting and moving and is beautifully directed by Lynch and the cast are fantastic.10/10

Classic, beautiful, heartbreaking...

I first saw this film when I was 8-9. I expected a scary thriller about a 'freak', what I saw was one of the most beautiful yet heartbreaking things I have ever seen. I appreciate the true value of this film now more than I did then. The writing, the acting, the story, the message. Despite it's 'historical inacuracies', it remains one of my favourite films.
Buy it, especially for it's great extra features.

John Hurt gives a terrific performance as "the Elephant Man", John Merrick, and Anthony Hopkins is great in support as the Doctor trying to help the "Circus Sideshow". This timeless film is moving, poigniant and a must-have in the dvd collection.

xThe Elephant Man has got to be one of those films which both makes you want to celebrate the birth of film and the birth of story telling. If you have yet to learn of the boy-come-beast (of Leicester origin) you are in for a treat, this is one of very few great stories on the Elephant man and although is May not be 100% Fact - it is certainly based on a very true story. Not only does John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins deliver what I can only estimate as being the nothing short of amazing performances the film was also directed by the great David Lynch which makes for a very positive film with a twist of melancholy. Like I said if you have yet t see the Elephant Man your really in for a treat. If you have already seen this move... that explains why you're on the classic DVD section because you know it's worth every penny.
Celebrate Film - idolise Actors - love David Lynch and cherish The Elephant Man
