Known for his 'mystical psych-guitar fuzz,' as Spin Magazine puts it, Sacramento native Anton Barbeau has released something like a million billion albums, including collaborations with the Bevis Frond, the late Scott Miller, Oxford folkies Stornoway and Sharron Kraus and his own band Three Minute Tease, the latter featuring ex-Soft Boys Andy Metcalfe and Morris Windsor. Perhaps it's surprising for some, then, that Barbeau's latest solo release, Antronica, is a synth-heavy offering. It's not surprising for the artist, however. 'I grew up on my parents' Beatles, Doors and Neil Diamond albums, but it was Gary Numan who sparked the desire in me to actually play music,' he says. In 2011, after living in Cambridge, England for 5 years, Barbeau moved to Berlin, 'the electronic music capitol of the world,' apparently. Lead-off track 'Clubbing In Berlin,' an homage to life in his new hometown, was the catalyst that led Barbeau to assemble Antronica. 'I wrote that song in the shower - jetlagged, either too much or not enough coffee (can't remember) and in a bad mood. A beat, a bassline and one piss-take lyric later- it's a hit!' Barbeau was excited by this track and played it for friends who encouraged him to 'go electro.' This was easy enough, as the songwriter had a backlog of synth-pop tracks already in the bag and needing a home. 'Suddenly I had an excuse to release 'Magic Duck!'' Speaking of 'Magic Duck,' the other songs on Antronica reflect Barbeau's more typically eclectic approach to making music. Tracks, like 'Psychedelic Mynde' and 'Thanks' are keyboardy reworkings of standard-model Antsongs. 'The Girl, America' was written with the Corner Laughers' Karla Kane in mind, and bypassing the Numan influence, has been described as Barbeau's 'most Neil Diamond song ever.' 'Trouble Was Born' started as a country-twang number, but the original tracks were gradually replaced by Mellotron-style saxes and such. For those with the patience and inclination, there's a 12 minute drone, all 'analogue and hiss,' hidden at the end of the album. For all the attention paid to electronics here, there are some wonderful guest performances on Antronica. Stornoway appear on the extended dub reworking of 'Dust Beneath My Wings,' as well as providing backing vocals (and party sounds!) on 'Psychedelic Mynde.' Jon Ouin from Stornoway plays banjo and cello on 'Dust' as well. Gozde Naiboglu provides the spoken list of tasty Turkish treats on 'Gozleme.' Bringing everything full circle, Barbeau only recently discovered that the Minimoog he played on the first Three MInute Tease album was the very same one used by Gary Numan on the latter's Cambridge-made debut. 'Considering that this synth had such a major impact on pop music, and subsequently on me, it's cosmically hysterical that it was just leaned up against a wall, quite unceremoniously, behind an amp. Needless to say, my head is blown by my direct connection to this instrument.' Perhaps Antronica II will see Barbeau return to Cambridge for a quick, sneaky session, but for the moment, it's 'Clubbing In Berlin' nonstop!
