Two Rihanna's in One
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 09/01/2012 04:53:43
Here we see two sides to Rihanna's music, you get the love and romance mixed a longside the dirty grittiness of her.
The earlier tracks on the album have more of a dance club feel about them, a good beat and nice tempo, something that could used to tear up da'club.
The later tracks are more of her older style, slower with the emphasis being on love and feelings.
Overall: Some really classic tracks here, some songs you'll want to listen to over and over again. A few of the songs are nothing new but are still nice enough to listen to.
Good Rihanna, not her best but still VERY GOOD!

My first album of 2012 (although it was released 2011) and it's got to be one of the best Pop albums of last year. She seems to be over the whole "Chris Brown" drama and has come up with a really solid pop album. Best songs: "We Found Love", "Where Have You Been", "Drunk On Love", "You Da One"...other tracks are all good.

An album with both positive and negative sides
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 28/11/2011 18:29:19
There's a lot to say about Rihanna's latest album, both positive and negative. Here's what I reckon, given via -'s (=negative) and +'s (=positive).
+: Rihanna know's her strength lays with "Good Girl Gone Bad (Reloaded)"; an album that had it all to appeal to many.
-: with this album, she just tries to repeat it (even Jay-Z has been re-introduced.. again).
+: this time, however, her choice of music even incorporates trance-like sounds; something she hadn't done before (with lead single "We Found Love" as the ultimate and almost flawless & perfect hight light!!!). I reckon that the Lady Gaga's, Katy Perry's, Christina Aguilera's and Britney Spears's of this world would kill for a song like that! Even when an entire room has gone dull, just play this song, and see everyone bouncing up again! :D
-: the semi-trance sound on "Where Have You Been" sounds rather like some clueless American girl discovered 90s European trance, and tries to give it her own 2011-spin on her My First Sony.
+: the album is filled with sexual themes (and profane words). I know some people who are disappointed because of just that, mostly because they don't reckon it correct for children. But come on: if you reckon that children should be fine while listening to her previous (perhaps even more sexual) songs, like "Rude Boy", "Only Girl In The World", and (especially) "S&M", and you reckon THIS too much, then I ask myself where your priorities are. If you reckon Rihanna to be some sort of children's artist, then replace her right now with anything from the Teletubbies, Sesamestreet (or even the latest repertoire of Take That or Westlife) or something like that. But that's just my opinion.
-: she has also released this album in a 'clean version', which I reckon to be some sort of advanced censorship. But for others, maybe this is just their thing! For me, though: it's not!
And my final points, which are rather a big minus:
-: the 'normal' album is rather short in playing time, but when you think that the bonus songs on the -Deluxe Edition- make this an album that will keep you listening for at least an hour, wake up! Even WITH bonus songs, you hardly reach the 50 minutes. For a -Deluxe Edition-, I'd reckon there should be some more extras and/or bonus songs. And if this is the best that they could come up with, then I know many Dutch, French, Danish, Greek and Turkish artists that either do include extras (videos, bonus songs to be downloaded when putting the CD in the computer, behind the scenes, a more advanced booklet, etc.) and/or bonus songs which make the album be worth the price, or when they have just released an album of some 30 to 40 minutes, they release it as a mid-price album (fixed price of euro 9,90).
Also: I love the 'song' "Birthday Cake". But that's just it: just when you're about to reckon it as a brill song, it just stops! At 1:18 minutes, it might be regarded as an outro to "Cockiness (Love It)" or as an intro to "We All Want Love" (when listening to the words, I'd reckon it's the first, btw). Anyhow, the song AND the entire album would be greatly improved if this song would be given at least some 3 minutes.
Nevertheless: eventhough I first reckoned this album as utter rubbish, I find it rather pleasing right now. It might not be her best album ("Good Girl Gone Bad (Reloaded)" has got that title, still), but it sure is another album which has given enough thought, yet, on certain points, not the maximum of thought. I would give it 3.5 stars out of 5, for all the aforementioned reasons, but as I have to choose between 3 or 4 stars, I choose 4 stars; simply because of the fact that she tried to include trance on her new record, a step I fully welcome!

Rihanna has proven with her sixth album that she is one of the most versatile artists around, with a voice that's captivating and powerful.
Taking the strengths from both 'Rated R' and 'Loud,' she has produced a cohesive piece of work which is well structured and a beautiful listening experiencing.
In terms of musical style, it is reminiscent of 'Rated R,' adopting an edgy slant to the lyrics, whilst maintaining a heartfelt honesty to the lyrics, especially in songs such as 'Farewell' and 'Fool in Love,' where we get to see a Rihanna's vulnerability on full display.
The lyrics, however, are not as dark as 'Rated R,' finding themselves somewhere between 'Rated R' and 'Loud'-a mixture of fun and positive with personal and poignant.
Rihanna's vocals are on top form throughout the album, her range exceptionally versatile and controlled, commanding the fast paced tracks as well as the slower ones. It's impressive that even in tracks such as 'Where Have You Been' and 'We Found Love' have such intriguing beats, it is Rihanna's vocals which stand out-a sign of a truly talented singer. Something Rihanna embodies without a doubt.
Standout tracks include 'Where Have You Been,' 'Roc Me Out,' 'Farewell' and 'Fool For Love,' along with the two singles so far 'We Found Love' and 'You Da One.' Nevertheless, all tracks on the album are exceptionally well produced and are of an extremely high standard.
Well done Rihanna, this is your best album to date, every track provides something unique and the album is a wholly enjoyable listening experience. You've talked that talk, and this album shows you can do a whole lot more than that!!!
