Don't you know that it's insane

I have heard too many bad reviews of this album. I realise that other people may not like vampire weekend's genre of music but their self titled debut album is brilliant, I have listened to it several times and not once have I been bored by the catchy melodies or puzzling lyrics. Also I am frustrated at reviews which claim "pretentiousness" and "rip off" but personally I think a song like bryn wouldn't work without the opening "ion displacement won't work in the basement especially when I'm not with you" I simply think that every song is rhythmic, melodic and lyrical gold and if you haven't heard it yet and you like bands like mgmt and Florence and the machines then you should definetly give it a go. I sincerely hope this review had helped you decide on whether to buy the album thank you.
P.S 4.99 BARGAIN!

Quirky, inspired and original mixing of styles which blows away the generic, dull, mass-market indie music around these days. Best album I have heard in years....refreshingly short instead of self-indulgent hours of mediocrity which you find a lot of bands produce.

A new and distinct sound

People have had so much difficulty in explaining exactly where the Vampires music lies. I suggest that you don't bother trying to pigeon hole them, just listen to one of the most diverse and innovative records ever, and enjoy it. Its both complex and simple at the same time. Its catchy yet still seems fresh on the fiftieth listen - yes I have listened to it that much.
The only criticism one could possibly throw at it as that its a little short at just over half an hour long.
Buy this album, you will not regret it.

Make Your Weekend Vampire!
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 26/04/2009 11:53:58
Vampire Weekend are fantastic, let's face it. Taking indie to the next level, their sound is unmistakable and in my opinion completely unique. I discovered this album quite a while after it was released as they have maintained under the radar for some time. "A-Punk", "Oxford Comma" and "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" are all funky, quirky classics. Another stand out track would have to be "The Kids Don't Stand A Chance". This album is a real ear pleaser and I would have to say one of the best indie band albums I have heard in a while! Can't wait to see what their second one is going to be like.

Don't get me wrong, this album is far from terrible, its just not that great. All the songs are very happy & summery, & definately get your foot tapping, but with the exception of a-punk, none of them really blow your mind. Although "oxford comma" is quite a good song.
This album isn't as good as could have been, none of the songs really push any boundaries or do anything that no other band does.
Also, personally i really like clever or well written lyrics, whereas, reading through the booklet from this album, vampire weekend seem to just write down whatever rhymes, regardless of whether it makes any sense, which in my opinion makes the music a little hard to take seriously..

This album is absoloutley fantastic, one of the greatest albums I have ever bought. Every single song on the album is a great song there isnt a dip in class, its just amazing throughout, I just advise you to atleast listen to a few taster songs before getting the album, as if your a heavy metal fan and jump t o this, you may die a little inside. :)

I brought this album off the back of thier 1st single and thought 'it's only a fiver so if it's rubbish it won't really matter'. Oh how pesimistic I was!
This album is alot better than I expected it to be. You can listen to the whole thing all the way through without having to skip any tracks (this helps as the album is quite short!).
Anyone who has heard even 1 of Vampire Weekends songs should buy this album, as that's what I did and it hasn't come out of my cd player since it was delivered!

Out of nowhere comes one amazing record
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 30/12/2008 03:01:40
I absolutely agree: this could well be the best album of 2008.
After one quick listen at the mp3 soundbites I got hooked immediately, bought the CD and never stopped listening to it since.
This instant cult record is something completely new, it doesn't resemble anything I've listened to in the last couple of years: it's got strings, chamberlins, drums, hand drums, harpsichords, guitars, you name it...
True, it's only 34 minutes long... but what 34 minutes!
Trouble is: will these guys ever be able to top this?
