A breath of fresh eastern air :-)

This album is excellent, the variety of instruments is outstanding, the electric/pop/classical/eastern blend will have any eclectic music fan's ears in an ecstasy of excitement. David Albarn has proved that he is a jack of all trades and is truly a master of them all.

If you've seen the pop opera (best thing ever) buy this, especially to jog your memory.
If you think it's another gorillaz album, it's not! It's a soundtrack to a chinese legend opera. All singing is in mandarin.
Of course if you speak mandarin that's fine. ;-)
The album is fantastic, but it really helps if you know the show and get where it's coming from.

jeez its music for an opera

Lol at some of the comments.
Go to any opera and i defy anyone to come out singing the music to it.
Its what it says it is, its effectively a soundtrack for an opera!!
After going to the show at the royal opera house and being able to place the music with what was going on stage helps.
It all fits in brilliantly and despite what one guy said "im a fan of david (?) albarn".
Another masterpiece by the ex-blur and gorillaz genius damon!!!
The show is at the o2 arena in nov/dec go and see it people!!!

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GORILLAZ OR THE OLYMPICS!
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 03/09/2008 13:12:03
I went to see the opera at the Royal Opera House in London while it was touring the UK earlier this summer, this is the soundtrack to this opera and has nothing to do with the gorrilaz, or the olympic theme tune on the BBC which is a totally different matter. People that have bought the CD and didn't know what they're buying that's there responsibility and it does not discredit the value of the music. One person so naive as to say it sounds like it belongs to a musical but there isn't one... I have to say that play did not correctly publicize it by putting "Gorillaz" in the object title giving people the wrong idea. The moral to this is know what you're buying before you buy. If you're expecting something that it isn't you're going to be dissapointed.

If you've seen the show its great!

WARNING! A lot of reviews from people on here are those who have missed the entire point of this CD. It IS NOT a Gorillaz CD, its a soundtrack to the play Monkey: Journey to the West that has been touring the country that Damon Albarn wrote the score for.
I went to see the play when it premiered in Manchester and it was awsome and the music really is catchy so I had to get this album. If you've seen the play then this will bring back great memories. If you've not seen the play don't bother buying it! (Or looking for the BBC theme which is free on their website).

......not, and never have been much of a Gorrilaz fan, which is probably why I really enjoyed this CD. It's one of the weirdest CD's I've bought but I have quite an open mind about most music and after the first disturbing play, I started to really enjoy it. No idea what the voices are rambling on about and no idea what the hell kind of music it is but if you give it a longer than usual chance I think you'll definately find a couple of tracks in there that you learn to love.
The artwork is excellent too.

The contents of the CD are terrible. A number of tracks are somewhere around 20 seconds long too. What dissapointed me most is that the catchy song used for the Olympics advert for BBC is not even in the CD.
Though the art in the case and booklet are as awesome as you get in any other Gorillaz merchandise. Other than that, it's terrible.
Only purchase this if you're a hardcore Gorillaz fan... though beware, it may even hurt them hardcore fans too.
