"Your love will be, safe with me"...
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 05/01/2011 13:21:08
As the story goes, the entire album was conceived, written, recorded and produced over the course of just a single winter spend in lead vocalist Justin Vernon's wood cabin, up in the remote mountains of Wisconsin. In this self inflicted "cathartic hibernation" Vernon has managed to create the extraordinary; a revelation. This is far from another generic male vocal led acoustic album; I believe Bon Iver stands out from the crowd in more ways than one. Vernon's falsetto vocals are particularly beautiful and perfect in relaying the vulnerability and depth of emotion behind the soul searing lyrics. There is a clear sense of emotional purging here, using song writing to vent his feelings and frustrations and the result is an overwhelmingly emotional album without a chart contemporary. Unlike many acoustic albums, which tend to get a bit...well, "same-y", I find this debut to be refreshing and not at all repetitive. I don't think there's a single song which falls short but a few choice favourites are "Lump Sum", "Skinny Love" and the opening gem "Flume". However the absolute cherry on an already rather sumptuous cake is the stunning closing track "RE: Stacks" - to which belongs the gorgeous closing lyrics which sum up an album which is ultimately about love. I can only find one slight flaw in this album and that is its length! At only 9 tracks it lasts just over half an hour - and seems to be over all too soon for my liking! As a shortcoming however that is a very minor one indeed, and it is clearly a case of quality over quantity. Each song has been whittled down and worked on for many months on end to achieve as close to perfection as any album I have heard thus far. I would go so far as to put this is one of my top 10 albums of all time. Buy it; it is truly sublime. 5/5. This album is amazing. Sit down, turn off the lights and soak up the passion. Justin Vernon's voice is haunting, the songs are surprisingly catchy and i cannot put this CD down. Highly recommended!! Note: This Review was made by Play.com customer: DanG81 on Rakuten’s Play.com on the date shown.

beautiful music, simply heart wrenching

I only discovered this band a week ago but this album is already one of my favourites. The story behind it is that the lead singer was suffering the effects of his previous band breaking up, splitting up with his girlfriend and illness and he wrote the music whilst he recovered in his Father's cabin in the north woods of Wisconsin. You can feel this vein of emotions running through every song; the lyrics are passionate and his voice is haunting. It is just a pleasure to listen to. The best tracks, in my opinion, are 'skinny love', 'flume' and 'for Emma' Note: This Review was made by Play.com customer: Corylus on Rakuten’s Play.com on the date shown.
Amazing

If you are looking for somthing different yet slightly familiar to the usual singer song writer music give this a try. The shear simplicity of it works beutifully, flume is a song to watch out for. Note: This Review was made by Play.com customer: Pinchy90 on Rakuten’s Play.com on the date shown.
It's a grower.

Best Album of 08?
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 27/12/2008 18:01:37
Great chilling and also spooky guitar work, mixed with really brilliant singing. A great album to relax too. Every song is awesome, my favorite's are Creature Fear, For Emma, Skinny Love and Flume, but the rest are amazing too. I think Bon's next album will be one to watch out for, I really dont know how he's gonna top this. Melancholic Masterpiece
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 17/11/2008 11:46:34
Bon Iver has produced an incredible album - up there with other melancholic masterpieces such as Van Morrison's 'Astral Weeks' and Jeff Buckley's 'Grace'. A string of incredibly minimalistic, glittering guitar scapes upon which he pins the most fragile, forlorn poetry. The album was infamously recorded over a 3 month period in a log cabin in the wilds of Wisconsin - and this lonely, desolate atmosphere pervades through the music. Songs such as 'Lump Sum', 'The Wolves' and 'Re:Stacks' are astonishingly beautiful creations and continue to be highly emotive even after months of listening. Album of the year. BON!

18 Male I was introduced to Bon Iver from my sister I had never heard of him before but because of musical interests interact in some areas she decided to share and I've got to say his work is fantastic. There is not a song on the album I would skip if listening to and this is the kind of album I look for. One with all around good quality songs not just one brilliant one. His vocals are some what different but amazing at the same time. Because the music is not that over powering it is good to listen to when doing work because it is not distracting. Definatly recommend the track re:stacks its really good. I don't know who to compare him to so I'm just gonna say if you like acoustic guitar soft male vocals with a powerful lyrics then buy this album. I like Elliot Smith, Idlewild, Death Cab For Cutie, Shins, Ben Folds, Brendan Benson and so on. So maybe if you like these get it otherwise get it anyway!
