Farewell to Fish
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 30/07/2012 20:41:40
Marillion's fourth album and last with Fish as frontman felt a bit lacklustre to me. Having read the other reviews I seem to be on my own on this, but I felt the three previous albums were all better. The album works well in places with some great melodies and Fish's usual thoughtful lyrics, and the album feels more mellow, but it just didnt seem to "hit the spot". I remember the first time I heard it and thinking it didnt seem to get off the ground.
Having said that, there are moments of absolute brilliance, but its not enough to give it five stars. Decide for yourself....

Fish's final and lasting testament

This is a very powerful, sincere rock masterpiece.
The story of a crumbling life style , failing relationship, alcohol in addition to an absolute stormer about the Bands rawness having visited Aushwitz during a tour with powerful melody, harmonies this album takes your through a real emotional journey.
Total respect to uncompromising Mr Fish.
ps the remastered album is worth the extra few quid a second CD has a further set of unreleased songs - all good enough for an album in there own right and shows the class of this band.

This album just oozes class. Musically it is just wonderful - beautiful, melodic, light, haunting, powerful......a whole mix of emotions. Once you grasp the lyrics then you will find real depth and meaning to them - it is simply amazing. There are a number of stand out songs based merely on the sound coming out of the speakers, but once you are familiar with the album then you will realise that the whole album is a story, a means to an end and an absolute masterpiece of the collective talents of this fantastic band. A must have album!!

The best album ever made?

While much of the focus of Marillion's career with Fish lands on "Misplaced Childhood", perhaps more should be directed towards the vastly superior "Clutching At Straws".
Topping on album like "Misplaced Childhood", at least in a commercial sense, was never going to be easy. "Clutching At Straws" is a far more mature and cohesive album than its more famous predecessor.
The opening salvo of "Hotel Hobbies", "Warm Wet Circles" and "That Time Of The Night" sums up what Marillion were (and still are ) all about. Biting lyrics, soaring guitar melodies and top quality musicianship.
The album contains two of the best solos ever written Steve Rothery's guitar on "Sugar Mice" and Mark Kelly's keyboard on "Incommunicado".
There really isn't a wasted second on this album and in my opinion Marillion have never bettered it.
Standout Tracks: Warm Wet Circles Trilogy, Sugar Mice
