As the drums kick into the fierce opener "Tarot Woman", it's obvious that RISING delivers directly to your door. It is the band's second release, and a vast improvement over RICHIE BLACKMORE'S RAINBOW. With a revamped lineup that sounds like it had been touring together for years, the album takes no prisoners. "Starstruck" is a classic groove reminiscent of guitarist Blackmore's ex-band Deep Purple. Blackmore replaced everyone from the first album's lineup except vocalist Ronnie Dio with Jimmy Bain (bass), Tony Carey (keyboards), and Cozy Powell (drums). Dio shows what he's got with a stellar performance on "Do You Close Your Eyes". "Stargazer" is the band's "Kashmir", an epic eight-minute track that could stand as its signature song. "A Light in the Black" features the skin bashing of the late, great Mr. Powell.RISING is a must-have for any fan of Dio, Blackmore, or classic metal. Five musicians came together for a one-shot moment that won't be duplicated. The album is magic.

Rising Higher and Higher

Simply the best Rainbow album of them all and one of the best rock albums of all time. I don't think there is a weak track on it and even after all these years still delivers in spades.
If you don't own this, then shame on you...

Rising to Greatness

I personally am not sure whether this is Rainbow's best record, considering the 3 records Dio did with Rainbow all had amazing song. But, if you really want to start off with Dio, or indeed Rainbow then this surely is the album to get. Seriously, its fantastic. Though it isnt strictly 'Heavy Metal' it does have that flavour and influence, Ritchie Blackmore's amazing guitar work, Dio's voice, and all the other musicians too.
Seriously, buy this record!!

This has to be one of the best.....if not the best......rock albums I have ever heard. The Album starts with a tuneful keyboard intro which ascends like an elephant crashing through a wall into complete rock heaven. Ronie James Dio's Voice, Richie Blackmores guitar rifts and the great Cozy Powel smash and crash their way into "Tarot Woman"............and onto what I think is the greatest rock song ever written "Stargazer"............outstanding. I have played this album over and over again and just never get bored of it.....Rainbow Rock

Something evil's passing by..

British Heavy Rock at its monumental best. Perhaps the best album to be spawned from the break-up of Deep Purple. This album has it all with plenty of hair around the balls.
Tarot Woman - that keyboard intro is merely the calm before the hurricane.
Run With The Wolf - class-lick from Dio and Co.
Starstruck - quite jolly for the most part but it still ROCKS.
Do You Close Your Eyes - a little tongue in cheek diddy.
Stargazer - the Kashmir of this album. A tale about tortured souls building a tower of stone for the Wizard.
A Light In The Black - it's all good.
A great album which Rainbow were never quite able to replicate. There are only a handful of truly great rock albums and this has to be one of them. It has to be!

A True Rock Classic
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 27/07/2008 19:21:28
I know, 'classic' is one of the words used far too often and too lighly. But here it is not an overstatement at all.
I think it was Mojo magazine who called this album "thermo nuclear rock 'n' roll". I don't know what that actually means but yet it sounds right. I just listened to the album again and it is one of the greatest achievements in the history of rock. You might say tracks Starstruck and Do You Close Your Eyes are not on par with the other tracks, but they're still pretty damn good, too.
This is an essential album, if you haven't heard or got it, get it asap. And just let Blackmore et al blow you away.

Top marks for top band

In my opinion, this is where Rainbow peaked and they never saw the likes of this again. Credit must go to the late Cozy Powell. This is how to hit drums hard and still make them sound incredible. Tony Cary's keyboards are inspired and of course, Blackmores guitar licks were never to sound the same again. And finally, Dio's voice is to be marvelled at. If you love heavy rock this album is a MUST HAVE.
