Decorated Civil War veteran Nathan Algren (Cruise) is sent to Japan to train and lead the Emperor's troops in modern Western, gunpowder intensive, warfare to eliminate the country's remaining rebelling samurai.
Captured and imprisoned by the outlawed warriors, Algren is slowly swayed by their strict adherence to the honourable code of Bushido and, when the Emperor's forces mass once again, Algren offers to join his former captors in an effort to preserve their way of life...

I have watched the Last Samurai more times than I care to remember the battle scene at the climax of the movie is one of the most realistic I have every scene catched on film. For the limited time I had a HD DVD player I purchased this to replace my DVD and then again on Blu Ray, everything about this film is outstanding from the cast, story and or course the quality of the blu ray transfer, and will purchase again on the next format, and even though I watched it half an hour before writing this, I going to watch it again.

This blu-ray version is good, there's not much to fault with the picture quality but I do feel let down by the inclusion of only a dolby digital track,it sounds ok but this is a hi -def format so the least I expect is a hi-def surround sound option.

This is a very good and well directed show about japans revoultion from old time to modern times! The story of (tom cruise a drunken captain) of the american calvary now turning his coat and siding with the samurai once they capture juring a fight and he learns their ways! The supporting cast is good with (billy conolly as his sergant) and (ken watanabe as the samurai leader)! The blu-ray transfer is just stunning and that the word for it the scenery of the hillside to towns to battle scenes is just stunning, the colour is beautiful and sound is excellent! Just buy and enjoy.

THE LEGEND THAT IS TOM CRUISE
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 28/02/2011 20:41:55
One of Tom Cruise's best films - with this, people are reminded of his outstanding talent in the arts and what a phenomenal actor he is. People have forgotten, and to be honest, so did I, at a certain point, especially after his horrible stunt in Tropic Thunder; he became a sort of joke, a laughing stock but after watching this film one more time, I was reminded how great he was, once, or maybe still is. This film brought tears to my eyes and Hans Zimmer composed the soundtrack beautifully and it fits perfectly with the actual movie. There's no better actor who could've been as magical as Tom Cruise and this movie shows his true colours. Definitely a must-have for anyone.

In my opinion this is Tom Cruises best film by a mile and one of the finest films of the modern era. Anyone unsure about watching this should give it a go and I can guarantee you will like it. A classic.

Tom Cruise's Finest Moment
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 06/01/2011 15:49:36
Most probably one the best films ever made. Beautiful filming and location, excellent acting and a fantastic storyline to go with it. Epic battles to go with it with plenty of blood shed and see how the way of the samurai was actually lived. Tom Cruise plays the role of his career in this film as the disgraced Civil War hero Nathan Algren who is captured by the samurai and slowly becomes to love them as his own. Follow him through this epic journey of love, loss and peace. Stunning a must have.
