Troy - in all it's glory!
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 23/01/2013 21:56:36
If you are looking for some good movies to have as part of your Blu-ray collection then Troy is one of them. The picture quality is sharp and crystal clear, the sound explosive and with an additional 30 minutes of action with this directors cut, gives a new edge to the movie which is missed in the original theatrical release which fans will relish. The only criticism is that the original musical score with certain scenes has been changed which changes the emotional response to what you see in the DVD version (e.g hector/ achilles fight scene and the final scenes) so if you like the music the way it is in the theatrical version hang onto your DVD. Other then that however, if you love historical epics or ancient Greece this movie is an excellent addition to your collection!

There are but a few "extended edition's" that are usefull, Troy is one of them. Already a brilliant movie, this particular release make's it more brilliant. I adore Greek mythology, so Troy is a welcome addition.

This version of the film is fantastic. It gives more details of the event making the experience of the film far more enjoyable. The blu-ray version is also a one of a kind. The extra features are also very interesting.
I would highly recommend it as it enriched my collection.

Let Battle Begin..............

The reviews are definitely on the money! This looks superb on Blu-ray and has been well transferred over onto the format. And in a film with such lavish production design and top notch visual effects employed in the recreation of it's Ancient Worlds it makes for a film that is very easy on the eyes!
Telling (in admittedly highly time compressed manner) the story of the Iliad, the siege of Troy and it's fall it's essentially boiled down to a struggle for power and control, triggered by a love affair which acts a force to trigger it.
In Director's Cut form there are definite improvements to the flow of the story thanks to the addition of nearly 30 minutes of new footage and since it's almost always the character moments that get cut in a film this size their restoration is welcome. Mostly the performances are pretty good (although I have to admit that I do think Pitt was miscast in the lead) especially from Eric Bana as Hector, who emerges probably as the most developed and sympathetic character in the film.
The extra features here also seem to have been mostly carried over from the 2 Disc DVD edition but as noted while it looks like a huge amount when you see the features menu, most are shorts of about a couple minutes each though some are longer. I went through them in around 90 minutes in full.
All in, while it's not quite as good as Gladiator, it's still a rollicking good Sword 'n' Sandals extravaganza!

3 star film becomes 5
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 14/12/2011 22:10:07
I wasn't the biggest fan of the original DVD version of Troy, it was allways lacking depth and feel of the characters and story, and i allways thought that was a dissapointment because of the spectacular scenery and epic battle scenes. I bought this because i am up dating my collection to blu ray, i originally wasent going to bother because it was so low down in my order favourites but i had read a lot of great reviews and with the price being so good i thought id go for it. I was amazed all the way through. The parts which had been put back where they belong completly changed the film, the story had the depth it needed, you could understand why all the characters did what they did, with the extra scenes and clear picture i was on the edge of my seat through the battle scenes, everything was as it should from start to finish.
In my order of films Troy has moved from 43rd to 4th behind LOTR only!

gorgeous blu ray epic

This on blu ray just looks stunning,
I see some are not so keen, I am a big fan of epic's and historic films and was not sure I wanted to see this as Brad Pitt just didnt seem like a good choice for this kind of movie to me at the time, but I ended up getting it with a three disc dvd set along with the last samurai and alexander, before I go on I just want to say that this just wipes it's feet all over alexander, the last samurai is just too diferent to compare so it gets away from a comparison. I take my hat off to Brad Pitt in this as I ended up enjoying his performance, the film is dramatic, Brian Cox is just brilliant, and the music score is captivating, but most of all the transfer is absolutley top notch, the best looking blu ray in my collection so far

Great film improved by directors cut more action in HD
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 24/01/2011 17:41:25
Troy was a great film now with added action scenes and longer opening scene which all add to an already fantastic film. The Story is an old greek ledgend thats brilliantly directed by Wolfgang Peterson . I prefure this film to Gladiator and can watch it over and over again especially the Hector and Achilles fight the fact that it is on blu-ray makes the film look and sound brilliant. A must buy.

Why does everybody on here like this film?? Its dismal.. Yeh good action scenes, but thats it. Brad Pitt is awfull. (and iam a big fan of his) and Olando Bloom is the worst British 'Hollywood' actor ever. I cant watch anyfilm he is in because he ruins it.. yes eric banner is very good in this, but the whole film stinks. it was heavily advertised because they spent a fortune making it, and it turned out to be a flop.
imo worst film ever.....

Just Didn¿t Happen for ME
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 19/01/2011 11:31:10
Ok, I guess i'm about to go against the Popular opinion, but I didn't like this movie.
Don't get me wrong I love a good old Fashioned Epic such as Bravheart, Gladiator. But this just didn't work for me
To be honest I didn't like the look of it from the first trailer, but watched it on recommendation from a few people.
Normally when I don't wanna watch a movie and have low expectations for it, I find that I really end up enjoying it. Not this time.
The story is obviously a good one, and I enjoyed reading it in school, and it should be brilliant on the Big Screen
But the casting of Brad Pitt just didn't work for me. And I'm a big fan of the guy. Excellent Actor.
But here he just seemed to be trying too hard, I could actually see him trying to act. Never a good sign.
But he just came across as a Russell Crowe Gladiator wannabe. And don't even get me started in Orlando Bloom.
The only saving grace was the performances of Eric Bana, Brain Cox and Peter O Toole.
I was watching the 3 hours directors cut and I gave up after 2 hours, and I NEVER give up on a movie.
I'm now gonna have to watch Gladiator, Braveheart and 300 back to back to get this out of my system. Lol
