The epic journey of four generations of Americans who carved a country with their bare hands.
With courage, sinew and conflict: that's how the West was won. With three directors, five interlocked stories, some of the most legendary action scenes in movie history and a constellation of acting talent: that's how How The West Was Won was filmed.Henry Fonda, Gregory Peck, Debbie Reynolds, James Stewart and John Wayne are among the big names in this big-event saga following a dauntless family's move West through generations - underscored by the spectacles of a heart-pounding raging river ride, a thunderous buffalo stampede and a bracing runaway train shootout. The winner of three Academy Awards, How The West Was Won was also a box-office winner.

FULL OF MEMORIES

well, these are the 'stars' many of us grew up admiring down the years, sadly time has taken it's toll, most of the actors we remember well are no longer here.
the film spans four generations of a family's journey into the west.
a little simplistic in content, trying to cram so much into a little spec of time, missing much in the way of significant events through the period covered.
that's not to say i didn't enjoy the movie, i did, but probably more for the roles however small, stars of yesteryear played.
the transfer to this format is really pretty good, they have sharpened the picture presentation.................memories are priceless.........enjoy

Should win you over

They don't get much bigger than this - a huge, expansive panoply of pioneering life in the early days of the US. Cramming in an all-star cast and at nearly three hours, it screams importance but it's professionally done through and through and some of it is exhilaratingly well handled. Four Oscar-winning cinematographers make sure it looks amazing, the stunt work is second to none (check out that train crash at the end) and Alfred Newman provides one of his finest scores. The main gripe is the three-strip Cinerama process which had the audiences flocking in 1963 - its perfect for showcasing wide vistas and rousing action scenes but it's murder on the actors who almost all come across as being stiff and self-conscious.
They've done an absolutely marvellous job with the HD transfer. The film looks truly stunning. This is what you feel the format was invented for.

The three panels of the Cinerama movie have been stitched together meticulously and the dividing lines are only sometimes barely visible and in no way spoil the widescreen experience - especially when shown on a HD videoprojector at 3.40m wide. This blueray presentation is sooooo much better than any of the letterbox tv broadcasts you may have seen. Even now not the entire HD resolution is used. It is 1080p but still has (rightfully so) large letterbox bars to show the entire 3 frames in parallel.
Great Cinerama experience, wonderful music by Alfred Newman, crisp picture and sound. At current take away price, take it away!
(the Dutch and Belgians may recognize the theme music also as the one used for the BRT Axel Nort series)

One of my top five blu-ray titles for sheer quality of picture. It couldn't have been easy getting rid of the lines, and you still see the join but only a bit - what you get is an almost bizarrely lifelike film experience where you almost feel your standing there watching everything happen. The film itself is a great grand epic if a little simplistic but it's superb fun and now, along with Baraka, 2001, The Dark Knight, WALL-E and Blade Runner, a truly essential purchase that no blu-ray collection should be without.

Cinerama as it should have been
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 06/10/2008 14:19:03
This version of How this West Was Won shows what 3 film strip Cinerama should have looked like. Gone are the slightly different colours and the jiggling lines between the three panels. We are just left with a majestic ultra wide screen image which, as befits Blu-ray, is ultra sharp HIgh Definition with full rich colour. I was particularly pleased that they did not mess about 'panning and scanning' the image. It is just left as a wide screen image with all the panels visible at all times.
If you really want the feeling of sitting in the cinema there is a 'grin box' version on the disks. This is a picture in the typical shape of a curved screen tall at each side and narrow in the middle.
Excellent commentaries are included to accompany the film should you wish to play them which give an excellent insight into the making of this epic production.
