An Exciting Discovery

At the age of 15 I was intrigued by Lies, then Watching and finally hooked by Hold Me Now. From that point on I became a fan of The Thompson Twins. I bought Into the Gap - and it still ranks as one of my favourite albums. I found Quick Step and Side Kicks but was not as impressed with it.
Thanks to Edsel, the albums have enjoyed a long-awaited release on CD, complete with extra tracks. Even better, Edsel gave me the chance to finally buy earlier material which I had never heard (I could never find A Product of... or Set in the shops).
Both are excellent albums, A Product of... easily the better of the two. I find myself listening to both albums over and over again. I can see the passion and the brilliance that started The Thompson Twins towards their later success. Much as I enjoyed Here's To Future Days and Close to the Bone, they are comparatively passionless.
For those who want to listen to The Thompson Twins at their best, these two albums are a must-have. I'm glad that Edsel have given me the chance to listen to A Product of...and Set. Previously I had only been familiar with In the Name of Love. Its great to find better material - Could Be Her..., Make Believe...and many more.

The Secret Golden Era of the Thompson Twins

I was 15 in 1984 when I bought Into The Gap on the strength of Hold Me Now and Doctor Doctor. I then bought their previous album Quick Step Side Kick and discovered it was better!
My older brother and his friends had seen them play at their university before these releases and had loved them. Then they despaired when they heard their hit singles in the charts. I thought they were being pretentious.
At the time a Product of.. and Set were on budget release so based on previous purchases I figured it was worth checking out what all the fuss was about. I was amazed to find what seemed like a totally different band! Tom Bailey had already developed his Numan-esque vocal but the backing was packed with energy and musical ideas all generated from real instruments. No synthesizers. A Product of... quickly became my personal favourite. Tracks such as Could Be Her... Could Be You, Make Believe, The Price and Perfect Game have early 80's attitude all over it. Fantastic.
So when the re-release happened I ordered it straight away. The extended version of Make Believe is a real treat with added instrumentation and White Stripes style big electric guitar high up in the mix.
This release uncovers an even earlier pre-Twins chapter from 1980. This is real anthology, collectors item stuff. Although its less than 6 months before A Product of... Tom hasn't found his vocal yet which is interesting to hear. Squares and Triangles is typical New Wave and the instrumental Modern Plumbing using saws and household objects predicts his instrumentals that will fill entire B-sides of the cassette version of their later albums (in the 80's cassettes were the dominant format!).
Set has.... 3 versions of In the Name of Love which shows how enthusiatic Tom Bailey was about his new synthesizer. Alongside Love on Your Side it captures the moment when they still had the manic energy in the songs whilst adding slick clean production. In time they would turn to Nile Rodgers and end up sounding like a mid-America AOR group. With no place for Joe Leeway's bizzare wailing he did the only thing he could do. Pack up his bongos and go home!
So saviour this! There's lots of extra stuff here for the ardent fan without needing to pack it out with similar mixes of the same track. Great sleave notes too.
