Sounding like a Big Star album recorded in Sebadoh's practice space, this exploration into '60s rock mythology is the one that sealed Guided By Voices' lo-fi legend. From their hideaway in Dayton, Ohio, Guided By Voices previously released six albums with almost no distribution (the first five, in fact, had none at all) and minuscule production values before gaining the critical attention that would blossom with BEE THOUSAND. The production remains maddeningly haphazard here, but the seemingly tossed-off melodies are ever grander. And with the help of a Breeders' cover of their "Shocker In Gloomtown", Guided By Voices are now quite ready for indie-rock stardom. What voices guide songwriter Robert Pollard? He kept his gig as an elementary-school teacher until around the time of BEE THOUSAND, which possibly explains why GBV's best moments sound like casual sonnets scrawled on a high-school text, or like they're stolen from his students. "Her Psychology Today" finds Pollard correcting a paper: "When she speaks the flag unfurls/And the heavens split in half/When she launches her attack/In her opening paragraph". BEE THOUSAND's excellence is largely in its sparse arrangements and casual fragments of songs. Rather than obsess over completion, Pollard lets his songs bask in their casual greatness.
