Four films on John Cage by Frank Scheffer and Andrew Culver19 QUESTIONS:- Cage answers 19 questions on a variety of subjects, using chance operations to determine the duration of his colourful and often witty answers. A unique opportunity to view the Cagean process of chance in real-time.FOURTEEN:- Performed by the Ives Ensemble. A unique performance film in which the position and operation of the cameras, the lighting design, placement of the musicians, and the editing process were all subjected to chance operations.PAYING ATTENTION:- Agreeing on the duration, Scheffer worked with the video and Culver the audio from an interview with Cage
treating their parts independently. The video and audio were reunited during the editing in the same spirit as Cage/Cunningham music and dance collaborations - the two aspects were presented together for the first time in the performance.OVERPOPULATION AND ART:- Cage's spoken performance of his Overpopulation and Art is presented simultaneously with his Ryoanji for four voices and percussion. The video was shot at two locations where Cage lived - Manhattan and at Stony Point, NY. Scheffer used the graphic score of Ryoanji to track the camera's movements for much of this work.
