Classical guitarists, Helen Avakian and Terry Champlin"Musikos Peripatos (A Musical Stroll)" provides an enjoyable journey from Baroque to modern with styles encompassing traditional classical, Flamenco, Armenian folk and even a hint of jazz all in the medium of the classical guitar duet. Featuring favorite duets arranged or composed by Terry Champlin and Helen Avakian, the CD includes Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto in D, Terry Champlin's Musikos Peripatos, the Flamenco piece Zambra, and George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. 'Musikos Peripatos' was voted number one favorite recording in Rhythm and News Magazine's readers' poll. The unusual title of the CD was suggested by international guitar builder, Nicholas Ioannou. Upon hearing Terry's commission for classical guitar's most renowned duo, Evangelos and Liza of Athens, Greece, Nicholas remarked that the piece had a feeling of returning at the end. "Peripatos" is a Greek word that refers to a stroll such as Aristotle, Plato and friends might take through the Acropolis as they philosophized. Eventually they would end up where they started but perhaps they had traveled further than expected. From lyrical mystery to fiery virtuosity, Terry Champlin and Helen Avakian's performances are 'spellbinding.' (Vassar College Miscellany News) Classical guitarists Terry Champlin and Helen Avakian are husband and wife. They have played together as a duo and with various ensembles for over a decade in a variety of settings including Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall, Bar Harbor Modern Music Festival, WNYC public radio and the Bearsville Theater. Originally educated as a theoretical physicist at MIT, Terry Champlin switched to music at the age of 21. He has written over 100 pieces for all mediums, from orchestra to solo classical guitar. His music has been performed in Korea, Japan, Mexico, Greece and throughout Europe by such artists as Evangelos and Liza (Andres Segovia's favorite guitar duo), David Starobin, the New York Guitar Quartet, Betty-Jean Hagen, Music for Six Hands, the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra and the Highlands Symphony. Terry Champlin has performed in the "Hear America First" series in Carnegie Recital Hall, at Avery Fischer Hall, with the Concord String Quartet, at the Bar Harbor New Music Festival, and in the Fairbanks Music Festival. Several of his recordings have been released on the "Viennese Modern Masters" label. He has been featured on WNYC where he has presented many of his own works, and his compositions have been broadcast on the "Ars Nova" PBS television series. In addition, Mr. Champlin has done extensive editing and arranging, working with, among others, Alan Hovhaness, William Schumann, and David Amram. He is on the faculties of Vassar College and Mannes College of Music. His arrangements of music from the classical and romantic masters are often featured in his performances. Helen Avakian is a versatile musician, performing on her own and with various groups ranging from dance companies to folk/rock bands. She has appeared on PBS radio and television. She shared the stage with actors Vanessa and Rachel Redgrave as the guitarist in their production of 'Sarah Bernhardt Comes to Town.' Ms. Avakian is an accompanist for the Flamenco dance program at Bard College. She holds a Master's degree in classical guitar performance from Hunter College with studies at Mannes College of Music in New York City. In addition to her classical activities, Helen is award-winning singer/songwriter. She has been referred to as "an incredibly talented musician and songwriter... You will come away from one of her performances with a feeling that you have just seen a rising star.' (More Sugar) Her CD, 'Vanishing Point,' (available on CDBaby)has been gathering praise from reviewers who call it 'an excellent album that features top-notch vocals and instrumentation.'
