Rhys Darby is the genre breaking breaking boundary leaping comic genius from New Zealand. His sensational blend of sound effects, characterisations and askew observations has been reducing international audiences to a state of bewildered hysteria since he launched himself onto the world circuit in 2002. By combining stand up story telling with physical theatre, Rhys has developed a truly unique style of comedy performance.

Good comedy...but not for all
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 03/04/2009 15:07:41
This dvd had me in tears crying in laughter. It's one of the few comedy dvds that had me in tears in fact. There's one bit in particular (about bumper boats) that is hilarious.
If you love flight of the conchords humour (and not just the songs) you should love this. Rhys puts on an amazing show. I found the intro a little annoying but everyone seems to be doing these sorts of intros on there dvds (Pablo Francisco, Ricky Gervais, Jimmy Carr...etc). I can understand why some people might not like this as most of the show does revolve around him making sound effects (which makes his storys so much better).

New, Shiny and Hysterically Talented

Rhys Darby's got the most out-of-the-box style to comedy this decade. He prides himself on "Bringing back mime, with what it was missing - Sound Effects!"
And what sound effects they are, robots, jetpacks, mermaids and walkmans to name a few of the masterfully recreated noises - using only his lips.
That's his medium, now his style.
Topics include Rhys' childhood experiences, like the army and New Zealand. This is coupled together with complete abstract craziness; such as the bouncy-castle crusades and mermaid-shagging.
Non-Stop comedy from the get-go and all without insulting anyone other than himself, he is defenatly one to watch out for.
Wall breaking comedy isn't for everyone though so you should probably watch him on youtube first to see if he's your style. Just remember that Rhys constantly builds up to a simply golden finale.
If you find the youtube clips amusing (or above) then buy him now - you will not regret it, and you can quote me.

I bought this DVD after seeing him live at a comedy show. He was brilliant and had the crowd in hysterics, but the DVD doesn't live up to expectations. He simply isn't funny! So childish and daft, its painfully boring to watch! I turned this off after 10mins

Marmite for the eyes

Love flight of the Conchords liked this but like the other guy said it is a bit childish at times. I wanted to enjoy this but listening to a guy make robot noises throughout his whole set really gets boring and just doesn't do it for me. I think he should try some more original stand up cos he has the voice to tell it well!

One of the Most Original Comedians At the Moment

I went to see this guy live and he doesn't disappoint. If you're familiar with him as Murray you'll be surprised at how different his style of comedy is. It's very physical and almost like a child's entertainer - only with very funny, clever and naughty humour.
The DVD is great for people who haven't seen him live but for those that have it might seem a little pointless. His set doesn't change too much. There is however some great little outtakes, new sketches and a hilarious interview.
