Good return to form, though bloated.

Much better than Room On Fire, although much poorer than Is This It.
A good return to form overall with some great tracks on board, starting with the bouncy You Only Live Twice, the thumping Juicebox and the thundering Heart In A Cage.
Things reach a height with the superb Razorblade, but then the album just loses its way and their are too many under-par tracks, theres a brief upsurge with Ize Of The World, but overall its their 3rd best album, the boys will learn from this and the next album is leaner and meaner !!

Flawed but still very likable.

This album is not on par with Is This It or Room On Fire but it is by no means a bad album. It has some fantastic songs. It's just that the band tried too hard to make the songs unique by changing their song structures. I thought this was totally unnecessary and was in response their previous album being far too samey, and it ruined some potentially great songs (eg. Vision of Division's awkwardly placed solo, Ize Of The World's overly long chorus, Ask Me Anything's complete lack of percussion or guitar.) Despite the flaws, First Impressions Of Earth is a very likable album.

no wonder this album is pricey& the most expensive on here..

..It's because it's bloody fantastic!!
There are a few tunes which will catch your attention straight away, simply because of their ridiculously catchy, upbeat riffs. Juice box & electricityscape being two of them.
The lyrics are perfection as usual. There's never very many of them, but what mr. Casablancas does say- is always delightfully dry, blunt & honest i.e
'My feelings are more important than yours,' & of course 'don't be a coconut..!'
Every single song on this album is catchy, & i never find myself skipping a track. Out of all their albums i believe this one to be the best. Rather than having a few stand out songs like the other two albums, this one is more of a listen to it all the way through.
Considering that i'm not a major strokes fan i was surprised at how much i liked this album. It takes a fair few listens to appreciate all the tracks- some of them have a slow start. However once you've listened to it all the way through a few times i think you'll see what i mean!
The album sold itself for me mostly because of the fantastic lyrics coupled with its great riffs. The lyrics are always simple yet poignant, and teamed with strong, catchy beats make it strokes heaven.
If i had my way i would give it a 4 and a half out of 5. However that isn't an option so i gave it a 4, as the strokes are, after all, an acquired taste. And 5 out of 5 is a generous figure!

A brand new approach - Not their best, not the worst
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 29/04/2008 18:49:18
After the disappointment that was room on fire the strokes returned with an enjoyable third album, although its not entirely the strokes everyone knows and loves.
The sound has largely changed and this album has a more rock than indie approach to it. The catchy guitar openings and laid back (great) muffled vocals have gone. Instead you get a more shouty and louder julian. The guitar riffs are still there and better than ever. Hearts in a cage and juicebox open with flarey and stylish guitar solos which give great effect as these songs pound on with raw intent.
Its not their best and its not their worst. Its more a hardedged approach which i clearly welcome. The strokes have left the teenager guitar pop and given a brilliant more grown up-ish album.

Great third album, nothing on "is this it".

Sadly, it seems the strokes will never be able to top their first album "Is this it". This album, the follow up to "Room on fire" is by no means a bad album but it just doesn't seem to capture that something that made their first album so special. It seems to me like they are trying to appeal to a wider audiance and almost as if they are trying too hard. It has a good few stand out songs that you will love but theres also a few on there that will make you think "why the hell is this on here?!". The album as a whole doesn't flow as well as the other two but if you just pick out your favorite songs you will love it. This album is definetly a grower. I recommend picking it up.

FIRST IMPRESSION(not very good), SECOND(one of the best)

When i first got this, i was a bit disappointed because the previous 2 were great (ROOM ON FIRE & IS THIS IT), but once i started listening to it more, because i really wanted to like it, because The Strokes are one of my favourite band.
I thought it was great, a must buy for anyone who likes FRATELLIS, COLDPLAY, SNOW PATROL, KILLERS, KEANE,STEREOPHONICS, HOOSIERS or OASIS
Can't wait for the next one

Average in the beginning, but it really grows on you.

At first I thought this was a pretty average album, but kept feeling compelled to return, it is now one of my favourite albums. Particular stand out tracks in my opinion are 'Razorblade', 'Ize Of The World' and 'Vision Of Division'.

My favorite strokes album

I first listend to track one (you only live one) and imdeiatly the strokes were my favorite band. Julian casabalancas is an exeptional voalist with a different singing voice but it goes with the music perfectly. Buying this album wad the best desision of my life

Is this it?....No, probably not.

Lets face it Stroke-a-philes, "Is this it" was a one off. A masterpiece. Up there in the who's who of critiques as one of the best albums of this short century. Its fantastic. This latest offering from Julian & co is very good, lets not shy from that fact, but yet again it falls short of that highest & earliest of hurdles. Its a much poppier effort than room on fire but I don't think that detracts from the album one bit. The poppiest track on 'is this it' was the most successfull, and the opening track on this album is the strokes best shot at mainstream glory. Very catch and very listenable and ultimately a worthwhile purchase. This album will satisfy, if not excite.
