Waste of A legendary cast
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 20/03/2011 21:15:56
First off What A cast!!!! That in itself should be a selling point, but it has to be said that they are wasted.Ghost story has some genuine"Make ya Jump" moments but they are frequent and wrapped around a confusing and often slow moving tale of buried secrets and revenge. It was incidentally Fred Astaires last movie and like I say isnt without its merits, just be prepared to be Scared and Distracted in equal measure.

Well worth a watch

I would recommend this film to any horror movie fan, I've watched it many times & it still gives me chills in certain scenes & I can't watch anything with Alice Krige in without being reminded of this film.
If anything could persuade you to watch it perhaps a mention that it was one of Fred Astaire's last screen roles might do it.

Great cast and interesting story

No, it's not a a fabulous movie but not as mediocre as the previous reviewer says (" the plot should have been changed to make it more interesting???!!"). This was a very good book by Peter Straub and maybe it does not transfer to film as well as it could have; the plot is a bit ponderous as it flicks between several decades, but there are some genuinely scary moments. The Chowder Society are four old men and lifelong friends who meet up regularly to tell eachother ghost stories and all share a shocking secret. The story flashes back to when they were young and stupidly do something which they spend the rest of their lives trying to forget. It's great to see these veteran Hollywood actors together, especially in a supernatural genre none of them are associated with. Not a truly memorable movie perhaps but definitely entertaining and deserves a second viewing. I liked it.

Worth a view

Not a very strong movie in my opinion. The plot just isn't very interesting and the veteran actors don't get much to work with in this film. I haven't read the book, but I think that they should've altered the original plot to make it more interesting as a movie (the story probably works a lot better as a novel).
Too many characters in the film and I didn't care about any of them. Mediocre acting.
