The cocaine cowboys of the '80s are gone, but Miami's Casablanca allure, the undercover cops and the attitudes of Michael Mann's culturally influential television series have been enhanced by time in the feature film version of Miami Vice. Ricardo Tubbs (Jamie Foxx) is urbane and dead smart. He lives with Bronx-born intel analyst Trudy (Naomie Harris), as they work undercover transporting drug loads into South Florida to identify a group responsible for three murders. Sonny Crockett (Colin Farrell) [to the untrained eye, his presentation may seem unorthodox, but procedurally he is sound] is charismatic and flirtatious until-while undercover working with the supplier of the South Florida group-he gets romantically entangled with Isabella (Gong Li), the Chinese-Cuban wife of an arms and drugs trafficker. The best undercover identity is oneself with the volume turned up and restraint unplugged. The intensity of this case pushes Crockett and Tubbs out onto the edge where identity and fabrication become blurred, where cop and player become one-especially for Crockett in his romance with Isabella and for Tubbs in the provocation of an assault on those he loves.

When I went to the cinema to see this, and I came away disappointed !
But on second viewing on DVD this film is a very good complex thriller. This update is nothing like the 80's TV show, only Crocket and Tubbs names remain the same, the characters are very different. I can understand alot of people hateing this film as with all Michael ( HEAT ) Mann's films it's very stylish but it treats the audiance with intelligence and this film's plot is quite complex. Mann does not spend time trying to explain what's going on with all the double crossing and under cover operations, It's as if he's saying Get on the ride, and if you don't like it or can't understand it, then get off now ! He does not pull any punches or make excuses. The film oozes with warm clammy tension and the action is very real, swift and brutal. The final shoot out is the best shoot out since Mann directed HEAT. This is almost a 5 star movie, but some times it does feel a bit of style over substance, and it may take repeated viewing to get the most out of this underated movie, but please stick with it. A classy cop movie for grown up's .
This Region 1 only version is the extended cut that runs about 15 minutes longer, what you get is an alternate opening sequence that takes place before the cinema version night club opening, there is no added action, but the extra footage does add alot to the relationship of the characters. If you never liked the original cinema cut, this will not win over any new fans, but for the few people on the planet that actually liked the movie it's a worthy addition just as long as your DVD is set up as multi regional or you get the disc converted to Region 2.
Miami Vice the movie will always be a Marmite movie, but it's a film that cannot just be watched once as it needs to be absorbed..... if you got the patience.
See If you like......
