it's not all doom and gloom!

reading the other reviews of this album i would stay well clear but i have been a fan of the blue nile since 1981 when they released "i love this life" a joyful little tune! sure their is a lot of heartache in there music but thats life.don't just see the dark side of this collection. what about "saturday night" when paul buchanan tells us "i'm in love with an ordinary girl" or "lets go out tonight"when he clearly loves his partner but hates their humdrum routine. an album full of love and a band full of human emotion. something to celebrate surely?

For anyone that needs to feel!

This album is without rival in generating images of lonely, rain-swept street, distant city lights and a deep ache in the heart. If you need to feel, then this is the album for you. I loved it from the very first listen and I continue to love it 20 years (or so) later.
Paul Buchanan and colleagues are far from prolific, as they have only turned out four albums in well over twenty years, but when they do......perfection!
The keyboards glimmer with texture and delicacy and Paul adds beautiful subtle chords that really pull you in. the drumming is sparce and soulful, as is all the instrumentation.
It makes you feel sad and bloody glad to be alive all at once - which is weird but satisfying in equal measure.
For anyone who believes in love, but also believes it will hurt when it ends.

Out of my collection hundreds of cds, this is one of the very few i will put on and listen to from start to finish, without the need to jump to the next track. i is probably the oldest cd i own but no other has surpassed its quality, on first listen you could easily dismiss it but over time i never got bored with the quality of writing and depth of music in each track. Superb!

This album has become one of my best friends.

It's been 18 years since a friend introduced me to this album and I have been forever grateful since. It does take repeated listening to pick up the subtle tunes and odd use of percussion that underpin the majestic synth that paints the background to each of the songs here. All of this instrumentation is set off superbly by Paul Buchanan's fantastic vocal that projects various emotions in sharp focus and the lyrics leave you feeling that now matter how lonely you feel there's someone else out there that has been through it all too. From the opening hammer falls of "Over The Hillside" to the sumptuous fade of "Saturday Night", this album takes you on journey of love breaking down and the feelings of loss and hopelessness we all go through.
It's a beautiful record. Despite the fact I've had this album for coming up to two decades, it still gets an airing at least once a month - or more if I feel I need the dose.
Do yourself a favour and buy this - then get to know it. It will pay you back for years and years.
