The Academy Award winning adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's violent, poetic and darkly funny crime novel No Country For Old Men sees The Coen Brothers produce their finest thriller to date. Set amongst the wild, empty, and imposing landscape of 1980s Texas, No Country For Old Men is a masterly tale of the good, the deranged, and the outright doomed.
Approaching retirement, Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) is one of the last links to the history of Texas' Old West and the men who patrolled the frontiers of decency and lawlessness. These days, though, he feels less and less able to comprehend the new breed of violent criminals that have drifted into his jurisdiction. Violent men like Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem): an enigmatic, psychopathic, and obsessively compulsive killer who determines the fate of his victims with a quick flip of a coin. Chigurh, an ex-special-forces operative turned hit man, has been hired to track down two million dollars in cash taken from the scene of a drug-deal gone awry and whoever spirited it away. That man is Llewellyn Moss (Josh Brolin): a financially struggling hardened Vietnam veteran who stumbled upon the money and a substantial amount of heroin amongst a sea of bloody corpses and a bullet-strewn truck whilst hunting antelope in the desert near the Mexican border.
McCarthy's melancholic and muscular prose is a perfect match for the Coen brothers' unique brand of poker-faced irony. The narrative ellipses entwine with the Coens' modern noir nonchalance and dark humour to highlight and explore the similarities and differences of Moss, Chigurh, and Bell as they try to track one another down. With dark intelligence and an unstoppable array of sly wit, No Country For Old Men is reminiscent of Joel and Ethan Coen's early neo-noir motion picture Blood Simple and their much-lauded Academy Award winning Fargo and is a cat-and-mouse chase epic that engages and excites from beginning to end.

A startling piece from the Coen Brothers, a stark, spare, deep, dark, rich crime thriller that is thoroughly exhilarating at every turn. Cowboy Brolin chances upon $2 million in cash after a drug bust has gone disastrously wrong in the desert. Foolishly he takes the money, only to become the target of a merciless killer, ruthlessly played by a terrifying Bardem. And presiding over it all is the majesterial Jones as a tired sheriff. Mixing humour with some pulse-pounding action sequences, and resolutely refusing to take any easy routes out, this is probably the best thing this talented duo has ever done.

"It's true that it's a story"
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 12/06/2012 23:41:36
Empire once wrote "in a perfect world every movie would be made by the coen brothers". Now although they can miss on occasion "intolerable cruelty" and "the ladykillers" for example, it can't be denied that when they get it right it's near perfection.
Now this movie won't be to everyones taste i'll give you that but if you do get where the coen's are coming from you are going to love it and will definitely rate it as one of the best movies you have seen that year. The idea to not have music accompany the movie or to build tension was a bold move and is a great example of how the coen's are right at the top of their game when making this movie, letting the camera do the storytelling and to build the unbelievable tension.
The transfer onto blu-ray?..................................
Truely epic. One of the best i've seen. Everything is spot on with this transfer. No banding, artifacting, edge enhancement, crushing or compression issues. Near perfection with no evidence of the dreaded dnr. Filmic grain completely in-tact.
Incredible detail and sharpness. The colours are vibrant and flesh tones are real and natural looking. Roger deakins cinematography is captured beautifully on this disc.
This disc is reference quality.

Coen brothers on top form
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 17/01/2012 19:38:30
I've seen this one a few good times, its very well acted by the cast,i think there performance's were excellent in this western crime film and the focus is very much on crime.
Its very brutal in places, blood slatter and nasty killings but it makes for excellent entertainment only the ending was a bit to be left desired but it gets the brain ticking

Straight Up Instant Classic

Not much to say, it's a Classic, Great Story, Direction and Acting.
yes Javier Bardem is mesmorising, but Josh Brolin should have got a bit more recognition at the award functions, and Tommy Lee Jones seems to be on a upward swing with this and In the Valley of Elah along with the fantastic but not much talked about The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada.
Watch NCFOM asap.

This show is outsanding im afraid to say and for this my own view the 3stars are underated actors who steal this show and make the film theirs! The storyline is of a simple cowboy hick who stumbles on money from a drug deal go wrong and steals it and then thats his life over! The hunt is on from hitman Coen who is so brutal, uncomprising, lethal in the way he excutes his victims! (he brings the whole new meaning to the keyhole and i mean that) The countryside is so beautifuuly shot in this film, and in blu-ray it looks stunning, the chases, shootouts and explosions are so clear and crisp its just worth the few pennies! The sound is clear as a bell and the music is hunting the ending is a suprise to! This is just a steal again at this price and its a really good thriller!

No fear for old men!

Utterly compelling! This film has a presence of unpredictability, dark and creepy. Not your usual hereo film, this is a good different American film. Terrific for blu-ray, with its slow atmospheric buildup, very progressive. Great vision and sound. Its horror, thriller, crime and art house, all mixed into one. If you like 'There will be blood', you'll love this. Hope you enjoy the film :D

Not for the Faint of Heart
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 07/01/2010 11:36:19
The film won 4 academy awards including best picture but unlike previous winners its not a feel good piece of nostalgic nonsence. Tommy Lee Jones is good as always in his law enforcement role but Javier Bardem steals the show.
This is a disturbing film which won't please everybody, but the storyline is great and the transfer to blue-ray is excellent. It's a bit light on special features which may displease some but I base my purchasing decisions on the feature and this one is top notch.
