Where do you start with tryin to score this film???? I read the previous reviews b4 watching this. All i can say is MARMITE...you will either love it or hate it. Its been described as a slow burner.SLOW BURNER?!?!?!? from my perspective it burned so long the flame actually went out! I'm more than happy with a good ol fashioned frightener....and one star of my two stars goes to the 80's feel and style of the movie... but by the end of the film i was left wondering if this was actually a remake...either way it doesn't matter...they shouldn't have bothered anyway.

This movie was bound to get mixed reviews, you'll love it or hate it.
For those who love thrilling white knuckle horrors will no doubt hate it, but this movie is a homage to the slow burn horrors of the 80's. Directed with a slow and steady pace by Ti West ( Cabin Fever 2 ) this movie is grainy in shooting style, and has opening and closing credits that do actualy give it that 80's retro feel. Even the movie is set in the mid 80's with a great soundtrack. It feels like a Dario Agento movie, as it gets the chills from the excellent use of sound effects, and not full of splatter. Nothing much happens for the first 36 minutes apart from character building, but on the 36th minute comes the first shock, and then the movie builds with some unsettleing moments.
I can fully understand those who hate this movie, but for those who grew up in the 80's and could not get enough of the grimey shocker's of the decade this movie comes as a great retro flashback.
Give it a try, but don't blame me if you hate it.

house of the bore

Firsty of all , this film is nothing like the title suggests . It was slow to get going , i agree with previous reviews that it only really picked up pace in the last 15-20 minutes which is a shame . There are no thrills and the film is quite predictable .A totally big let down .

Slow burning homage...

It's not gorno, buckets of blood are not shed, nor is there a killing ever five minutes, and theres not a monster in sight. How refreshing!
This is a masterclass in suspense. It slowly builds a feeling of dread with little more than an empty (?) house and a great character actor in Tom Noonon. West's love for the genre is clear, creating a movie that looks and sounds (check out the opening title sequence), like it was made in 1980.
Some reviews here complain about the films slow pacing and poor finale; ignore them. Any true horror fan will truly appriciate House Of The Devil for what it is, a good old fashioned horror that doesn't rely on cat in the cupboard shocks and stomach churning effects to have it's audience on edge.

This film takes along time to get into, there is a lot of suspense and eariness however the film only starts to get interesting in the last 15 minutes which was still very predictable. Dont believe the hype , and dont waste your time and money as there are alot better films out there.

Not as good as you are led to believe

As a horror fan this had passed me by until I saw it on sale in a store last week. The front of the box gives you the impression it is the best horror in years and there are also some promising reviews on the internet. I took the plunge and must say I was somewhat dissapointed.
Firstly, there is a lot to admire about the film....the early 80's feel and credits, the slow build up (albeit too slow IMO), what appears to be purposely bad acting at points and some great shots throughout, which all add to nostalgia.
However I must admit that's where the postives end. The build up is practically 60mins of the 90mins running time and in that time very little happens in terms of scares, yes it is atmospheric and that is a good thing but 2/3rds of a film in build up is a little excessive.
After that it devolves into practically a shot for shot renactment of any made for tv Hammer House of Horror shows from the eary 80's.
My wife is not a horror fan and does not like watching as she scares easily and thought it was corny, not scary at all and like watching a hammer house of horror episode.
It's not dreadful by any means and a lot better than run of the mill US mainstream horror but anyone who watches/buys should lower their expectations as this is not IMO a classic in any sense.

Took ages to get actually into the main story. The last 10 minutes were obvious. Pretty boring to be honest..

Right, you'll have to bear with me here.... Just watched this, and am in the process of watching it again, because I can't believe a film with such a fantastic first hour turned into a 'eh?' 'what?!' finale.
Seriously, for any decent horror fans out there, the bulid up in this film is pure class... The soundtrack can not be topped, the credit sequence fills you with the nostalgic joy of many a throwaway 80's horror, and the creeping around the house sustains all the tension you would want. Then it changes. You know from the title what is coming (pretty much), but, although it still looks great, and there are some wonderful shots, the whole revelation is so cack-handed I said to my flatmate 'Oh, it looks like I took over the direction here'...
Like I say, there is so much to enjoy in this wonderful film (for an hour), but I found myself wanting (and I have never said before) a cop out cliche ending.
Maybe on repeat viewings I will come to love this film as a whole, and I will definitely look out for Ti West's subsequent offerings, but at the mo, very disappointed. Don't let me put you off though - like the other reviews on here, and with a high 80% score on Rottentomatoes, there is much to be enjoyed.
I so wanted this to be the classic it almost was.
