In 1992 two of the world's most popular action superstars were brought together to create one of the most unforgettable martial arts/action/sci-fi cult classics of its time. The film was Universal Soldier, the stars were Jean-Claude Van Damme (JCVD, Legionnaire, Bloodsport, Kickboxer) and Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV, The Punisher, Direct Contact). In 2010 director John Hyams (NYPD Blue, One Dog Day, The Smashing Machine) has brought these legends of action cinema together again for the ultimate future killing machine showdown, Universal Soldier: Regeneration.
The world is in danger and the government is being threatened. Crazed terrorists are on the loose and will stop at nothing to cause death and destruction. Using stolen technology they have created their own version of the Universal Soldier: a lethal robot warrior whose only programme is to kill and kill again. The government's only hope is to regenerate Luc Deveraux, a decommissioned Unisol and expert assassin. His mission: to infiltrate a highly armed fortress, slaughter the enemy and save the world from nuclear disaster. But somebody - or something - is waiting for him, something intent on crushing the future into oblivion. Let the combat commence.

Universal soldier regeneration starts off a very slow story and holds more to a drama than an action film. The action does pick up later in the film.
The cover features Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolf Lundgren however they don't actually feature that much in the film comparatively speaking. Neither are in their prime any more and this shows in some of the action scenes where stunt doubles are clearly visible.
Speaking of which the non glamour shooting of the film and the non glamour special effects add grittyness to the film but is does mean that things like the stunt doubles are easier to see. Stunt doubles are obviously a well used technique so it is not unexpected but the continuity should have picked up some of that.
Overall the film is not the best but an enjoyable watch and easy viewing, there isn't too much to think about and if you are of a certain age you can get all nostalgic about seeing old movie heroes back in action.

I already had this excellant film on DVD but just had to get it on BLURAY soon as the price was affordable-i wasn't disapointed!-i watched it today on my sony bluray player and LG 42 inch LCD TV and was blown-away with the excellant sound and superb picture quality, the film isn't no where near as good the the 1st film but i think its far better universal soldier-the return(which was a disapointinf sequal)Universal Soldier Regeneration is action packed from start to finish and is the ideal bluray film to play on a 5.1 home cinema kit because of all the load gun fights and action-if your a Van Damme fan you must get this on bluray,or if you just like 'action' films then you must get this also-i give it 9 out of 10.

After watching Vin diesal , The Rock, Steve Austin and countless other bland wrestling stars try their hand at the action movie its finally taken two 40 odd year olds to show how its done. Van Damme and Dolph are back and they look awesome. Its a real blast from the past as this feels like an 80s action film. This is the true sequel to the original classic. Really good fun.

JCVD is back.

Its hard to put into words the reaction gained from watching this film. What I can say though is that the whole film was awe-inspiring. JCVD has created probably the perfect action movie with Universal Soldier: Regeneration.
The Plot is basically that the President's teenage Son and Daughter have been kidnapped by terrorists. They are been held in the ruins of Chernobyl, and the place is set to explode within 72 hours unless their demands are met. Oh, and the area is protected by zombie supersoldiers (UniSols). If the storyline sounds insane, thats no surprise. However it does all play out smoothly.
If you wish to know what the movie is like, several UniSols are sent in to defeat the enemy UniSol, and are promptly either impaled on objects or killed by repeated punches to the face. After 1 hour of losing, they finally send Van Damme in, and he dodges through gunfire to kill the hell out of any terrorist he sees. The violence level is high, with one scene having a UniSol's brains been blown out graphically.
Oddly for an action movie, there is no love of sorts involved in the film. Which is only a good thing, as the constant story and utter awesome of the movie justifies my five-star review. Its a must-watch at least once, especially after a few shots of vodka.

Better than the original
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 06/05/2010 00:12:55
I was pleasantly surprised by this film. After the debacle that was the sequel (I won't mention the others that came after).
The new 'improved' Unisol looks and acts as hard as nails and quickly dispatches the original four unisols that are sent to deal with him. I think they should have finished the film with a 3 way fight against Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren and Andre Arlovski. However the ending is satisfying, even leaving the door open for another film.
Other reviewers say it looks 'low budget', I beg to differ. It has been shot very professionally and puts so called blockbusters like Avatar to shame.
The film is non stop action, no love interest, no back story, none of the usual rubbish that directors use to pad out a film.
Buy it, you won't regret it.

Great Ending.... if you can get that far

If you can sit through the first hour you will get the most out of this, the dust up between Van Damme and Lundgren is great (although they both look like a couple of old men) but like all the other best bits this happens at the end of the film. Production values are not the highest and the plot is total guff but the look of this is very Modern Warfare as they base around the Chernobyl power plant. Worth a look if you are into old style action films...

1 star bc not possible to give less

It's another shameful attempt at reviving a franchise that went from outstanding (the first movie of course) to complete rubbish.
Save your money, run for your wallet.
JCVD appears merely 25 mins tops in the entire movie... and Dolph appears roughtly 5 mins...
The remaining hour 10 is filled with nonsensical action, bad acting, ...oh and half of the dialogues are actually in Russian!
The movie was shot in Russia...played by Russians for Russians and guess what...with Russian money.
Two words to sum up: UNIVERSAL LETDOWN

"..BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER.."

This is a very cool film! Its been a long time since the original and the actors have aged somewhat but that does not stop the two icons of the franchise coming back and kicking major butt! Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren were very good and the new unisol Andrei Arlovski was a great character too! The film has got a brilliant budget and is filled with lots of action scenes and massive scale shootouts and explosions and fighting, everything you expect! The story is very good too. In many ways this film is better than the original, certainly better than the first sequel that was made, you can look over that and think of this as the official sequel instead! Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren dont meet in the movie until the last 20mins but its worth the wait when they do because its clash of the titans once again in a very cool fight scene! If your a big fan you wont be disapointed with this its a proper continuation of the story at last with a quality budget. The picture quality on the blu-ray is good too, not one of the best but not bad at all.
