Outstanding Debut Album!!!
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 29/10/2008 12:53:06
It's hard to know where to start with a review having just been blown away by such an awesome debut album so I will break it down and take each track in order.
Say You Will- The opening number hits you straight away with the unique sound of MGB. A bluesy Hendrix-esque riff from Shane, a tight beat from Rob, a solid Bassline from Prod and the haunting Vox of Moyz just warming you up for the next 46 minutes of the album which will capture your whole being for that moment in time.
Fragile- From the very first time I heard this song It was an instant favorite. A Pacey rock anthem is the best way to describe this number. This song just invites you to turn up the volume. Just think sunny day, open road, strero blasting and pedal to the metal Fragile is the ultimate driving tune!!!
Somebody Else- This song is a true masterpiece particularly for Moyz. He shows his full range of Vocals and dynamics in this number. Again this shows how solid a unit the band are with each invividual adding to the mix for a memorable track.
Liars & Preachers- The title track is opened by an infectious riff which returns through-out the song. This is quite a heavy song but works well in the album showing the band are not just about one sound but can change the style when required.
Be- Another great opening sequence using a tapped riff exploding in a few bars of rock before dying away in to the smooth verse. The song works back and forth between the heavy rock chorus and smooth verse. This again shows the four piece can pull out a wide range of technique and sound to create another fine track.
Getting Back- This is a tight rocky number which flys off like a run-away train with big power chords and riffs, some nice Bass runs and well timed Vocals which are kept going by the well tempo'd beat.
Chains- This track shows more of the same with great dynamics and riffs which keep you listening for more. Shane shows great skill with a well timed solo which could easily last 10 mins in a live version how about it lads?
Die & Start Again- Opens with a great sequence from Rob on the Drums then a jazzy riff from Shane. Prod keeps it going with a funky Bassline. Just when you think it will erupt to a full blown rock it fades to the verse keeping you in suspense till the chorus for a well timed rock-on!!!
Redline- Starts softly with some rythmic chords and light beat flowing in to a punchy riff and Bassline. Moyz as ever with the well timed Vocals. Shane goes in to a quality 80's rock style solo which is not out of place in a MGB song as their songs lend themselves to a few different genres of music.
Convicted- Starts with a nice riff from Shane and run on the Drums from Rob. Moyz and Prod kick in very timely with blistering Vocals and a smooth Bass run respectively. I particularly enjoyed the harmony in the solo from Shane showing a different side again.
Just- Is the last song on the album but you wouldn't know, some bands put on the last few songs just to make up the tracks but this number certainly ain't that. More of the same from the lads with a solid numkber to finish off the album. This track switches between timings and shows more of the skill and technique which make the band what they are.
Overall this album is not what you'd expect from a debut album more of a well accomplished and established act. Which leaves the thought that if this is the bands first effort at an album what an exciting prospect further releases are!!! Keep up the good work guys we all look forward to more of the same!!!
All The Best Hendo!!!!
