Metallica continue to decline
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 02/03/2011 11:53:19
Just as dire as Load, boosted from two stars to three only by the song Fuel, which is absolute fantastic, and riff-heavy The Memory Remains, which is saved only by one or two good solos and a half-decent riff.

Here you have it,
Metallicas 7th album Reload,
While great on many levels it aslo has many flaws,
It seems less polished then its predeccor along with some annoying musical flaws that could have been made much better,
Eg. Bad Seed,
From listening to this song it was clear that the song could have been made much better with an extended section of the 2nd chorus,
"Spit it out now",
Then again some things you just have to love about it,
Its the slightly heavier of the two albums but generally quite slower aswell despite the 3 fast paced songs on the album (fuel, prince charming and attitute),
The riffs are strong, the solos are great and theres plently of lyrical hooks to keep you singing along,
Highlights include the opener fuel,(the most oldschool metallica style song on the album),
devils dance (which all bassists will not be able to resist playing along with) , where the wild things are( strangely no good riffs vocals or solos in this song yet strangely haunting), prince charming( a great catchy fast rocker and fixxer (part two of outlaw torn) the "epic" of the album,
I give it 4 stars simply because it could have been better with a bit more work but hetfield still delivers the goods,
Id advise getting load instead,
Its better in general,
But fans of alice in chains, pantera or zeppelin should enjoy this,

An amazing album - if you give it a chance

Many reviewers the world over will say that Load and Reload (and all albums that have followed) are bad. But those people are expecting a 'metal up your ass' attitude to be present in the music. There isn't.
If one forgets that Metallica also wrote Master of Puppets and all of their other thrash metal classics, and takes a step back to look at Reload as a CD of music with no expectations, one can appreciate just how good it is.
Reload is a loud, well-paced album with energetic, catchy songs (think Prince Charming) and of course the slow, acoustic ballads (in this case, Low Man's Lyric comes rather close to fitting the bill).
I don't listen to Reload when I'm in the mood for Metallica, or in the mood for heavy/thrash metal. I don't listen to it when I'm angry or when I want to play along with one of Kirk's solos. I listen to it when I want to hear my favourite album.
If given a chance -- to take each song as it is and nothing more -- Reload really is one of the better albums you'll ever hear in the rock/metal/alt genres.

Obvioulsy the first 4 songs are the best on the album. At first you probably won't like it but it'll slowly start to grow on you the way Load did. However it doesn't meet the standards of the monster that was The Black Album.

The album kicks off on a high with fast rocker Fuel, which is a great song. But from there on things are slowing down, and the songs are'nt good enough compared to the ones on Load. Not a must have!

Much the same as load. I flick between which album i prefer. Buy it because is metallica and its great but don't expect the old school thrash.

As Good As Load
Posted by Play.com Reviewer, 18/07/2007 17:27:37
After finishing Load, Metallica had a load of songs left over, so they made Reload. The result is again more alternative rock, But also some real power ballards. The album starts very strongly with Fuel which is almost as good as Metallica's earlier stuff. The Memory Remains is a brilliant alt. rock song with guest vocals from marrianne faithfull (very chilling song but outstanding). Devils Dance and The Unforgiven 2 are both great metallica songs and are as good as anything on Load, Unfortunately the album then tails off a bit and you could almost be forgiven for just listening to the first 4 tracks then changing the disc. Just like load this is a brilliant intro to Metallica, but many die hard fans will be unhappy with it. Again production and sound quality is good and the 4 songs i've mentioned make it worth getting either way.
