Gareth Mitchell is the man behind Philospher's Stone. Having previously worked with British experimentalists Amp, one might assume his own work would be in a similar vein. The only similarity, though, is in the level of artistic adventurousness. Where Amp goes for Drama, Mitchell plays it cool
Amp's trademark discord is replaced by subtly manipulated sound sources rubbing against each other to produce just the right amount of friction. PREPARATION has more in common with the wonderfully low-key work of Austin's Stars of the Lid than with any artist's on the other side of the pond. A telling moment occurs on "Where Regrets End" when Mitchell's Eno-like vocals are introduced, placing PREPARATION in its proper historical context as top-notch ambient "rock".
